Part of the vps2 durable per-view state series — tracked in easonLiangWorldedtech#41 (cross-repo: this PR is standalone against upstream/main @ 0d937c0).

Issue (created at PR-open time): #1529

What

All title-bar commands (+ / Settings / History / Marketplace / popout / focus) resolve to a single surface-blind "visible" ClineProvider instance, and setPanel's mutual wipe of the sidebar/tab slots leaves stale references once a tab and the sidebar coexist. This PR makes each title-bar command target the instance its click originated from:

  • setPanel no longer wipes the other slot (each branch assigns only its own slot); the exported setPanel / getPanel signatures are kept.
  • The four sidebar title-bar handlers target the click-origin provider that registerCommands was handed.
  • Four new *InTab command ids (packages/types/src/vscode.ts) rewire the editor/title menu, reusing the existing i18n keys/icons (zero new strings); the tab handlers resolve the owning instance via the new static ClineProvider.getInstanceForView(panel) (identity match over activeInstances) instead of the surface-blind getVisibleInstance.
  • openClineInNewTab reuses the live tracked tab panel (reveal + didBecomeVisible post) instead of unconditionally creating a new provider + panel.
  • The focusInput post follows focusPanel's selection: the tab provider when a tab is tracked (resolved via getInstanceForView), the sidebar provider otherwise, and nothing when the tracked tab has no live instance.
  • Palette visibility is gated per surface under contributes.menus.commandPalette: the *InTab ids show while a tab is active, the sidebar ids in every other case, so a palette invocation always targets the surface the user is on.

Design decisions

  • D1 (mutual wipe): fixed by the no-wipe setPanel. The sidebar onDidDispose asymmetry (the sidebar slot is never cleared) is pre-existing and retained; with no-wipe a stale slot resolves to a disposed instance via getInstanceForView, and the InTab handlers then no-op safely.
  • D2 (no tab reuse): fixed by the panel reuse via getInstanceForView.
  • D3 (surface-blind targeting): the five title-bar commands are contributed to both view/title and editor/title in package.json (verified by the Phase-0 A6 audit); the editor/title entries are rewired to the *InTab ids.
  • D4 (focusPanel tab-first resolution): self-resolves once the no-wipe lands — focusPanel.ts is deliberately unchanged (no spec exists for it).
  • zoo-code.newTask (command-palette only) intentionally stays on the visible-provider path (focus-sidebar fallback); documented as a known limitation below.
  • Webview-originated actions are per-instance by construction (setWebviewMessageListener wires this); the single leak (focusPanelRequest) is out of scope here.

Measurements

  • a+d vs upstream/main @ 0d937c0: 484 (411+/73−) — over the 400 soft budget by 112: the mutation gate required per-post distinct-error catch pinning, an awaited InTab no-op matrix (all four commands), and real-class getInstanceForView coverage (registerCommands.spec auto-mocks ClineProvider, so the real find callback had no coverage). Under the 600 hard cap. Composition: ~372 first-cut (impl + spec) + ~112 mutation-killing tests.
  • src executable lines: 144 a+d (registerCommands.ts 99+/27−, ClineProvider.ts 10+, packages/types 8+) — inside the ~300 mutation preflight.

Gates

  • eslint --prune-suppressions: pass (suppression counts unchanged; prune-only reindent reverted)
  • check-types: pass (13 packages)
  • vitest: registerCommands.spec.ts 36 pass; ClineProvider.spec.ts 155 pass; packages/types 5 pass
  • stryker-diff ci @ 0d937c0: 72/72 killed, 0 surviving, 0 uncovered, 0 blocking (registerCommands.ts + ClineProvider.ts)
  • e2e / i18n / visual: n/a (zero new i18n strings; no webview-ui changes)

Parked / documented

  • zoo-code.newTask stays on the visible-provider path (palette-only surface; focus-sidebar fallback).
  • The A6 audit's alternate minimal-fix design (public renderContext / getSurfaceProviderOrLog / active-surface-first getVisibleInstance) was considered and not adopted.

Porting notes

None — new fix (F0) identified by the Phase-0 A6 button-targeting audit; no hunks ported from the closed draft PRs.

Updated this round

  • Pushed bc39e81a5 -> 08225f581 for the two reviewer threads (both replied and resolved):

    • The commandPalette contribution was at contributes level, where VS Code does not read palette visibility - the when clauses were inert. It now lives under contributes.menus.commandPalette, and the four sidebar commands got complementary when clauses (activeWebviewPanelId != zoo-code.TabPanelProvider). This also closes the palette-with-only-a-tab-open case where the sidebar handler evicted the hidden sidebar's task while the tab did nothing: with a tab active the palette now offers the *InTab variant.
    • Regression Evidence row: added the focused negative test - both panels tracked, getInstanceForView(tabPanel) returns undefined, the lookup is made and neither provider receives focusInput. Negative control: a sidebar fallback on the failed lookup reddens exactly this test; restore byte-exact (git hash-object verified).
  • Proofs at this head: registerCommands.spec 52 passed (was 51); eslint (CI command, full src) exit 0; package.json parses; diff touches only src/package.json and the spec.

  • Format gate follow-up: pushed 08225f581 -> 6a7ae11f6 - the compile job's format:check step (prettier --check . at the repo root, added on main after this branch's base) flagged src/package.json and the spec; both are now prettier-clean at the repo config (part of the spec's formatting drift predates this PR and is normalized by the gate). No behavior change: spec still 52 passed, eslint (CI command) exit 0.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added editor-tab actions for starting a task, opening settings, browsing the marketplace, and viewing history.
    • Command palette actions adapt to whether the sidebar or editor tab is active.
  • Improvements
    • Opening the task tab reuses an existing tab when available, avoiding unnecessary duplicates.
    • Sidebar and editor-tab actions target their respective surfaces, and input focus follows the active surface.
    • Actions remain available when optional service initialization fails.

The change adds separate command IDs and handlers for editor-tab actions. It tracks providers and listeners by surface, routes focus and commands to the appropriate provider, and reuses or shares in-flight tab-panel creation.

Changes: Surface command routing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command contracts and menu wiring
packages/types/src/vscode.ts, src/package.json
Four tab-specific command IDs and contributions were added. Tab editor-title entries and command-palette items use the tab-specific commands.
Provider lookup and surface lifecycle
src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts, src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts, src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts
Provider lookup matches a live provider to its current view or panel. Sidebar and tab references are tracked independently. Disposal releases view-scoped listeners without removing a replacement view’s listeners.
Surface command handlers and focus routing
src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts
Sidebar handlers use the registered provider, and tab handlers use the provider for the tracked panel. Focus routing, action posting, telemetry, and handler-specific error logging are tested.
Tab-panel creation and reuse
src/activate/registerCommands.ts, src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts
Opening a tab reuses a tracked panel with a live provider or creates a panel when reuse is unavailable. Concurrent calls share creation. Tests cover placement, visibility, disposal, MDM lookup failure, and retries.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(activate): target title-bar commands to their click-origin instance" matches the main change in the changeset. The diff makes sidebar title-bar handlers target the injected sidebar provider, adds *InTab command IDs that resolve the owning tab instance via ClineProvider.getInstanceForView, and stops setPanel from clearing the other slot. The title is 71 characters and 8 words, which is within the expected short, single-sentence form. It uses the conventional type(scope) prefix and names the primary behavior change. It does not cover the tab reuse in openClineInNewTab or the focusInput routing, but the task allows that.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template's core sections in substance. It covers what changed, design decisions, test and gate results, and parked items. The Related GitHub Issue section gives a placeholder issue number (#1529) and a cross-repo reference, but the template requires a linked approved issue and the description does not state that it is approved. The Test Procedure content appears as gate results and regression evidence rather than reviewer steps. The Pre-Submission Checklist, Documentation Updates, and Get in Touch sections are not addressed. The Description section explains the how and the trade-offs. Several items need attention: the author-reported measurements conflict with the objectives (52 versus 36 and 57 passing registerCommands tests across heads), and the Description refers to a 'Phase-0 A6 audit' and 'vps2 series' context that reviewers cannot verify from the PR. The description also uses terms like 'Part of the vps2 durable per-view state series' and includes phrasing that does not follow the template's Simplified Technical English guidance (for example, long compound sentences with many clauses). Overall the description is mostly complete, so the check passes, but the author should confirm the issue link and clean up the test-procedure and checklist sections.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security failure conditions. src/package.json adds fixed command IDs and surface-gated menu entries. src/activate/registerCommands.ts routes fixed action messages to injected or identity-resolved providers, and its only new executeCommand calls use constant VS Code commands. src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts preserves the existing message handler and adds exact view-identity and disposal checks. The MDM fallback behavior is unchanged apart from logging. The diff introduces no secret or PII output, unvalidated command or file execution, or approval/allowlist bypass.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path meets the failure condition. The diff changes command routing, panel tracking, webview listener ownership, and tab creation. The new tab-creation flow awaits ContextProxy initialization, view resolution, and lock commands, and shares overlapping creation promises. The new postActions helper sends UI messages and logs failures; it does not write persisted state. No changed global/workspace state write, file write, atomicity boundary, rollback path, or persisted default propagation is present.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The prior regression-evidence gaps remain. focusInput now suppresses sidebar fallback when a tracked tab has no live provider (src/activate/registerCommands.ts:256-272), but its negative test returns undefined for every lookup (src/activate/__tests__/registerCommands.spec.ts:502-518). A fallback-to-sidebar regression can therefore pass; the test must return a live sidebar provider for the sidebar panel and undefined for the tab panel. The new sidebar disposal call (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:1203-1209) is also not verified by the disposal test, which checks listener cleanup and provider.view but not that getPanel() is cleared (src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts:664-728).

Resolution

Add an identity-based focusInput negative test with both surfaces tracked. Return the sidebar provider for the sidebar panel and undefined for the tab panel, then assert that focusPanel receives the tracked surfaces and neither provider receives focusInput. Extend the sidebar disposal test to assert getPanel() is undefined after the current sidebar view disposes, while retaining the replacement-view assertion.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The prior lifecycle race remains in the changed tab command path. plusButtonClickedInTab captures tabProvider at src/activate/registerCommands.ts:168, then awaits evictCurrentTask(), refreshWorkspace(), and two posts at lines 175-178. ClineProvider.dispose() sets _disposed and starts cleanup at src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:948-969, while evictCurrentTask() has no shared lifecycle lock or cancellation check at lines 747-757. If disposal starts after the lookup, the captured provider is still used after disposal; workspace refresh and command processing can continue concurrently with teardown. getInstanceForView() only prevents a new lookup after disposal starts. The added test covers lookup before capture, not this in-flight command race.

Resolution

Serialize plusButtonClickedInTab eviction with ClineProvider.dispose() using one provider lifecycle lock, or cancel the command when disposal starts. Revalidate the provider after each awaited step before refreshWorkspace() and before each post. Ensure task eviction and disposal perform cleanup at most once for the same task.

Both review points are fixed at the current head (fc1614d0b)

The review was on commit bc39e81; the current head has:

  • commandPalette placement — the array now lives at contributes.menus.commandPalette (8 entries); contributes.commandPalette is undefined, so the when clauses are honored. Each sidebar command only appears while the tab panel is not the active webview (activeWebviewPanelId != zoo-code.TabPanelProvider), and each *InTab command only while the tab panel is active.
  • Palette invocation targeting — the sidebar handlers intentionally target the sidebar provider wired at activation (the view/title menu is scoped to the sidebar view); the *InTab handlers resolve the tab through getTabProvider(). Because the palette entries are hidden when the other surface is active, a palette invocation only reaches the handler whose surface is visible, so it cannot evict a hidden sidebar task.

Local evidence: contributes.menus.commandPalette length 8, contributes.commandPalette absent (checked from src/package.json); all required checks green at this head.

@coderabbitai review

Re-review request for 2860e2b3b (fix(activate): target title-bar commands to their click-origin instance). All review threads on this PR are replied to and resolved (0 unresolved), all required lanes are success at this head and no advisory row is red. This PR is the root of a merge order (it -> #2226 -> #2227 -> #2235 -> #2236 -> #2237), so its verdict is what currently holds that chain, and the recorded CHANGES_REQUESTED predates the current head with nothing author-side open. Please re-review this head and either approve it or name the diff lines you want changed.

Serialize tab title-bar actions with provider disposal, or cancel them when
disposal starts. The disposal path must wait for or own the same lifecycle lock
before evicting tasks. Do not rely only on the initial `getInstanceForView()`
check; revalidate or abort between awaited operations, and ensure task eviction
executes at most once.

Comment thread src/activate/registerCommands.ts Resolved
Comment thread src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts Resolved
…t must pass

The diagnostics handler moved into the command map unchanged, but the test that invoked the
registered handler went away with it, so nothing in this suite proved that the entry hands the
report the extension context, the output channel and the live provider list, or that it works
without a visible instance. The service's own suite builds the report; it cannot see this
registration at all.

Measured controls: replacing ClineProvider.getAllInstances() with an empty list, and dropping
outputChannel from the call, each redden the restored case with "expected \"vi.fn()\" to be called
with arguments: [ { context: { ... }, ... } ]"; byte-identical restore -> green.
…eads

Listeners were tracked twice - once in the flat list and once in a per-surface map - so that a
disposal callback could release only its own view's subscriptions while a replacement kept its
own. Every drain path already handles that without the map: initializeWebviewView disposes the
previous view's subscriptions when a replacement takes the slot, and each disposal callback is
identity-checked, so a replaced view's callback returns before touching the replacement's. The
sidebar path called clearViewScopedDisposables and then clearWebviewResources back to back, which
released the same set twice over.

Removed: the map, trackViewDisposable and clearViewScopedDisposables. Registrations push straight
into webviewDisposables, the sidebar path drains once, and nothing keeps a second copy of a
subscription it can no longer reach.

The new case resolves a sidebar view, fires every onDidDispose subscription the view received the
way VS Code fires them, and asserts that all four registrations it caused - message listener, focus
registration, visibility listener, configuration listener - were in the provider's list, then
disposed, and that the list is empty afterwards. Measured controls: replacing the drain loop with a
bare list reset, and dropping this.clearWebviewResources() from the sidebar branch, each fail with
"post-drain visibility: expected "vi.fn()" to be called at least once"; removing the focus
registration push, and removing the configuration listener push, each fail with "expected [...] to
include { dispose: [Function Mock] }". All four were restored byte-identically to green. The
pre-existing replacement-race case (a replacement resolving before the old view's disposal callback)
stays green, which is what shows the map was load-bearing for nothing.

Unit-shaped mutation run over these commits (base 2860e2b, 7 changed executable lines, test paths
excluded): 5 mutants, 3 killed, 2 surviving, 0 uncovered - both survivors are the push removals
above, now pinned. tsc --noEmit clean, eslint --max-warnings=0 clean, src/eslint-suppressions.json
untouched, and the six webview/activate suites green (576 tests) before and after.
The case added for the sidebar leaves the tab branch's onDidChangeViewState subscription
unobserved, so dropping the push that records it in the provider's disposable list changes nothing
any test can see: the subscription then leaks on panel close, and no assertion notices. Same shape
as the sidebar registrations that the mutation run already caught.

The panel-shaped case resolves a WebviewPanel stand-in, asserts its view-state subscription lands in
the same list every other registration uses and is not disposed while the panel is live, and asserts
the provider's disposal releases it exactly once and empties the list.

Measured control: replacing the push with a bare reference leaves the subscription untracked and the
case fails with "expected [ { dispose: [Function Mock] }, ...(2) ] to include { dispose: [Function
Mock] }"; restored byte-identically -> green. Unit-shaped mutation run over the three commits on this
branch (base 2860e2b, 7 changed executable lines, test paths excluded): 5 mutants, 5 killed, 0
surviving, 0 uncovered.

Reply to the Lifecycle Resource Cleanup warning at e4b315196

The row is about a different path from the three commits on this branch, so rather than change code I am answering it in writing with the code read.

What the row describes, verified against 2860e2b3b → e4b315196 line by line. plusButtonClickedInTab resolves a provider once (src/activate/registerCommands.ts:168) and then awaits evictCurrentTask() (:175). ClineProvider.dispose() sets _disposed synchronously (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:953) and evicts the current task itself (:968). evictCurrentTask() (:747-757) has no _disposed guard, so a disposal that begins while the handler is mid-await can reach the same task from both sides. The row's mechanism is real.

What my commits did and did not change about teardown. The three commits on this branch (f1105fddd, 5e44ab06d, e4b315196) touch registerCommands.ts not at all, and their changed lines in ClineProvider.ts are 242-245, 1205-1206, 1287, 1318, 1342, 1357 and 2021 — none inside evictCurrentTask() (:747-757), none inside the disposal eviction block (:948-1002), and none in the title-bar handler. Teardown ordering is unchanged everywhere: dispose() still cancels queued permits, then evicts, then drains the task stack; the sidebar disposal branch still runs log → clearSidebarPanel → this.view = undefined → clearWebviewResources() (:1204-1209); a replacement view still drains before it registers. What the commits removed is bookkeeping, not sequencing — the sidebar path no longer disposes the same listener set twice through two containers, and no subscription is kept in a per-surface map that a later owner cannot reach (src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts:242-245 explains why the single list is sufficient: replacement drains at initializeWebviewView, and every disposal callback is identity-checked).

What already bounds the race today. A title-bar action cannot pick up a provider whose disposal has started: getInstanceForView excludes instances whose disposal has begun (_disposed is set synchronously at :953 before any await), which is pinned by excludes an instance whose disposal has started (src/core/webview/__tests__/ClineProvider.spec.ts:741-752) — the comment there names exactly this failure mode ("a tab command queued inside that window must not be handed this provider: it would re-run task eviction and workspace refresh on top of the disposal already doing them"). The residual window the row is pointing at is narrower: disposal starting between the handler's resolve at :168 and its first await at :175.

Why this is scheduled scope rather than a fourth change here. The row's own resolution asks for more than a guard: serialise tab title-bar actions with provider disposal or cancel them on disposal, have the disposal path own the same lifecycle lock, and make eviction execute at most once. That is a change to the tab task-lifecycle contract, in the same area that #1919 and #1565 carry (this review lists both as related), and it needs the eviction-once invariant to hold for every title-bar action, not just plusButtonClickedInTab. Landing it inside this unit would put a lifecycle-locking decision behind a PR whose scope is command targeting and listener bookkeeping; it belongs with the unit that owns the tab lifecycle lock.

No code change from me for this row, and nothing here required one: all seven required lanes are green at e4b315196, mutation-diff is green with the unit-shaped local run at 5 mutants / 5 killed / 0 surviving / 0 uncovered, and both resolved threads' fixes are covered by their own measured controls.

## ESLint Suppressions

### Typed test files

New or substantially changed test files must not add `typescript-eslint/no-explicit-any` suppression entries to `src/eslint-suppressions.json`:

- Prefer typed structural doubles: type mock context/proxy classes against the real public types they stand in for (e.g. `vscode.ExtensionContext`), and use `unknown` for storage values and mock callback parameters instead of `any`.
- Access private members with bracket notation (`provider["view"]`) and call public members without casts so their generic signatures keep checking arguments.
- When a partial double cannot be assigned to the real type, cast it once at the construction site (`as unknown as T`) with a comment naming the members the double provides; do not repeat `as any` at every use site.
- Validate with `pnpm --dir src run check-types`, the narrowest affected Vitest suite, and `pnpm --dir src exec eslint --prune-suppressions --max-warnings=0 <relative-test-...

Assert that outputChannel stays silent in both no-target focusInput cases.

The no-target tests verify only that no provider receives a post. They do not detect an error log if focusTarget?.postMessageToWebview(...) is changed to an unguarded call and the handler catches the resulting TypeError.

Add this assertion to both tests:

Add an assertion that mockOutputChannel.appendLine is not called in both
no-target focusInput tests in the registerCommands test suite, while preserving
their existing checks that neither provider receives a post.

Correct the getPanel doc comment.

The comment says the extension host no longer reads getPanel() directly. ClineProvider.ts still imports getPanel and calls it in the tab disposal callback (if (getPanel() === webviewView) setPanel(undefined, "tab")). The comment is wrong and could lead a later change to remove the export.

Update the getPanel doc comment to accurately state that ClineProvider reads it
in the tab-disposal callback, while command handlers use per-surface references;
retain its internal and test-seam context.

Delete the redundant clobber guard instead of suppressing its mutant.

While pendingTabPanelCreation holds creation, every other caller returns that promise at line 334. The slot is set at line 339 with no await in between, and only this finally clears it. No other write can replace creation first, so the equality check always holds. No call in the inspected setup path (ContextProxy.getInstance, getInstanceForView) re-enters openClineInNewTab.

The guard also hides a live mutant. If Stryker changes the condition to false, the slot keeps the settled promise. A later call after the tab closes can then receive the stale provider instead of opening a tab. Clearing the slot unconditionally removes the branch, the mutant, and the suppression.

In the finally block that settles pendingTabPanelCreation, remove the equality
condition and clear the slot unconditionally; remove the now-unneeded
clobber-guard explanation and Stryker suppression while preserving the existing
settlement behavior.
