Problem

  • formData.append(name, s3file), then new Response(formData), new Request() or fetch(), sends the entry as part headers with an empty body. Nothing throws.
  • Cause: the store::Data::S3 arm of FormDataContext::on_entry (src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:3646) was a TODO.

Fix

Background

  • A Blob holds bytes in memory, a file, or an S3 key. Blob::from_dom_form_data is synchronous, and an S3 object needs a request.
  • On main, structuredClone(s3file) leaves the file's size at 0. Without that, size 0 means an empty slice.
  • The first walk records which Blob failed. A second walk, on the failure path, finds its name.
  • Considered: the name read in the first walk (3 to 6 instructions per entry). Also a fallible Blob accessor and a streamed part (Notes).

Downsides

  • An S3 file in a FormData was an empty upload. It now throws, also inside libraries: openai.files.create({ file: s3file }) rejects.
  • From the resolve_size() change: expect(s3file).toHaveLength(0) fails, and console.log(request) over an S3 file prints no (0 KB).
  • Still lost: new File([header, s3file]) drops the S3 bytes. With no S3 entry: 3401 to 3402 instructions per new Response(formData), .text +768 bytes.
Notes

Repro (no network, the endpoint is never dialed):

const s3file = new Bun.S3Client({ endpoint: "http://127.0.0.1:9", accessKeyId: "AK", secretAccessKey: "SK", bucket: "bkt" })
  .file("reports/2026.csv", { type: "text/csv" });
const fd = new FormData();
fd.append("file", s3file);
fd.append("note", "after");
console.log(JSON.stringify(await new Response(fd).text()));
// 1.3.14 to 1.4.3 and main: the "file" part is its headers, a blank line, then the next boundary

The message. FormData entry "report" is an S3 file, which cannot be read while the body is serialized. Pass its bytes instead: new File([await s3file.bytes()], s3file.name, { type: s3file.type }). The name goes through bun_core::fmt::quote. A test runs the printed expression as it is and checks the bytes, the filename and the Content-Type of the part. The message names a File and not a formData.append() call, because a caller of a library has no such call. new Response() and new Request() throw it, and fetch() rejects with it.

s3file.name and TypeScript. The expression in the message is JavaScript. S3File.name is declared name?: string (packages/bun-types/s3.d.ts:640), so under strict the expression gives TS2345. At run time the name of an S3 file is always a string: the key. The docs and the JSDoc use a literal file name for that reason, and both snippets pass tsc --strict. The declaration is not changed here.

Shapes that throw. S3Client.file(), Bun.file("s3://..."), a non-empty slice of either, and new File([s3file], name). They share one S3 store.

Why the empty slice is safe to let through. Size 0 on an S3 store had two meanings on main: an empty slice, and an unknown size that resolve_size() had overwritten. On main try { structuredClone(s3file) } catch {} leaves s3file.size === 0, and so do expect(s3file).toHaveLength(0) and port.postMessage(s3file). With the resolve_size() change the second meaning is gone. One more writer of size 0 exists: s3file.slice(-5, 3), a negative start with a positive end, while the size of the object is unknown. That is the arithmetic of slice() on main. Such an entry is an empty part before and after this PR.

The failure state and the second walk. FormDataContext has one field for a failure, Option<FormDataFailure>. Thrown means that the file arm threw. S3Entry holds the address of the Blob of the entry. throw_for_s3_entry (Blob.rs:873) walks the entries again, finds the entry with that address, copies its name and throws. The address is compared and never read. Each formData.append() makes a Blob of its own, and nothing runs between the two walks, so the address names one entry. Two earlier shapes of this PR read the name in the S3 arm. The name then stays live across on_entry for every entry. With the throw inline, a string entry cost 6 more instructions (120 to 126). With a cold function that is not inlined, 3 to 5 more.

Measurements. Release builds of main 6292c65 and of this branch (7e0878f, the same source as the head), same toolchain. Instructions are counted with gdb, single-stepped from entry to return of the named function, calls 41 to 64 of a 64-iteration loop, bucketed by symbol. Allocator calls are entries into mi_malloc and mi_free in the same window. perf, valgrind, strace and bloaty are not installed on the machine.

Call Function main This PR
new Response(formData), a string entry and a Blob entry Body::Value::from_js 3401 3402
same, plus a Bun.file() entry Body::Value::from_js 6751 6752

  • In the first two rows from_dom_form_data goes from 294 to 298, and for_each_thunk from 308 to 305 (581 to 578 with the file entry). Every other symbol bucket is equal. The failure field is 16 bytes now and the frame is 16 bytes larger.
  • Per new Response(formData): 5 mallocs, 2 frees and 0 syscalls before and after. With the file entry: 8, 5 and 5.
  • Release .text: 82,253,657 to 82,254,425 bytes (llvm-size -A). The stripped binary: 107,833,056 to 107,837,152 bytes.

Libraries. A library that builds a FormData from a caller's file has the same empty part today. I ran one, openai 7.43.0, against local servers. On main openai.files.create({ file: s3file }) resolves, and the server receives a 0-byte file. On this branch it rejects with Connection error., and the TypeError is its cause. With the File from the message it uploads the 14 bytes.

Not changed here.

  • new File([header, s3file]) and new Blob([a, s3file]) copy their parts when they are made, and an S3 part adds no bytes. The result is an in-memory blob, so the serializer cannot see the loss.
  • s3file.slice(n, n).text() requests Range: bytes=n-n and returns one byte. FormData treats that slice as empty.
  • Bun.file() entries ahead of the S3 entry are read before the refusal.
  • from_dom_form_data returns a Blob and reports a failure as a pending exception. Its three callers check for one. fetch: reject a FormData body whose Bun.file() cannot be read with a TypeError #37514 changes how it reports a file error.
  • expect(s3file).toHaveLength(n) now fails with Received length: 1797..., which is DBL_MAX in full. Main prints the same for a FIFO and for a missing Bun.file(). The matcher message is separate work.
  • Other synchronous readers take an S3 file as zero bytes: Bun.hash, CryptoHasher, Bun.Archive entries. Refuse an S3-backed Blob at spawn stdin, in the shell, in Bun.build files and in redis #46673 covers Bun.spawn stdin, the shell, Bun.build files and redis.

Larger designs.

Related.

Tests. FormData-multipart-serialization.test.ts has 21 new rows. 18 fail on main (release build of 6292c65) and on 1.4.2. The 3 that pass there pin behaviour that this PR keeps: the two slice(n, n) rows, and a missing file ahead of an S3 file. The rows use the S3 server in test/packages/s3-server. A row that expects no request first sends one request to each server, and then reads the logs. The 27 tests of #46653: 26 fail on main, 7 in s3.test.ts and 19 in body.test.ts. On a debug build of this branch s3.test.ts has 314 pass and body.test.ts 796 pass, 0 fail. Also run on a debug build: FormData.test.ts, FormData-file-error-leak.test.ts, fetch-file-upload.test.ts, form-data-set-append.test.js, structured-clone-blob-file.test.ts (211 pass), and before the last source edit inspect.test.js, blob.test.ts, response.test.ts (276 pass). bun-types.test.ts: 24 pass. bun run rust:mordant: nothing over the baseline. clippy: clean.

Review.

  • CodeRabbit. The docs say that an empty slice does not throw. The snippets type-check. The second walk stays, for the cost above, but the size test is in one place now.
  • mordant field_valid_only_when: the two flags are one enum.
  • A later review: the change to .body and .textStream() of an S3 body had no test in this PR. s3: leave the size of an S3 blob unknown in resolve_size #46653 is now merged in with its tests. Two more optional points from it are left: a bare .toThrow() in a row of s3: leave the size of an S3 blob unknown in resolve_size #46653 (passed on to s3: leave the size of an S3 blob unknown in resolve_size #46653), and the matcher message above.
  • Two read-only passes over the diff raised 19 concerns. Addressed: throw_for_s3_entry takes the FormData by reference, a debug_assert! for the second walk, the doc of the pointer, tests that could not fail (the request logs), rows that repeated others, the size rows, rows for an S3 file next to a missing file, a test title, the tests of the resolve_size() change, and four points in the docs and the JSDoc. Left: the first and fourth items of "Not changed here", the slice(-5, 3) case, the second walk, and s3file.name in the message.

no test proof · iteration 1 · platform-specific test(s) that do not run on this machine, deferring to CI, which covers all platforms: test/js/web/html/FormData-multipart-serialization.test.ts

…g an empty part

Blob::from_dom_form_data builds the multipart body synchronously. For an
entry backed by an S3 store it wrote the part headers and no content, so
new Response(formData), new Request() and fetch() all succeeded and the
receiver stored an empty file. The serializer now throws a TypeError
naming the entry, and no longer resolves the entry's size first, which
for an S3 blob replaced the unknown size with 0.

Walkthrough

FormData serialization now throws a named TypeError for non-empty S3 entries. Empty S3 slices remain empty parts. S3 Blob size handling preserves existing size information, and the documentation describes how to convert an S3 entry to a File.

Status: ready for review at 56d0ece. That is d75d336 plus one empty commit that ran CI again.

Reproduced on the released builds (1.4.0, 1.4.2 and 1.4.3) and on main. Append an S3Client.file() to a FormData, then serialize it with new Response(), new Request() and fetch() against a local server. All three produce the part headers followed by an empty body, and the server receives the request. With this branch new Response() and new Request() throw the TypeError, fetch() rejects with it, nothing is sent, and no request goes to S3.

Tests: the describe block at the end of test/js/web/html/FormData-multipart-serialization.test.ts. 18 of its 21 rows fail on main and on 1.4.2, and all pass on a debug build of this branch. The three that pass on main pin what this PR keeps: the two slice(n, n) rows, and a missing file ahead of an S3 file. The 27 tests of #46653 are on this branch too: 26 fail on main, and all pass on the debug build.

What changed in this revision:

CI on 56d0ece (build 131829): 180 jobs passed and 1 failed. The failed job is a darwin x64 test job, and the cause is outside this diff. module-graph-isolation.test.ts failed one test on all three attempts: its fixture printed {"arrivedFromTheGraph":-1}, so the Bun.listen() server had not yet seen the host's own Bun.connect() after 10 turns of the event loop. That test uses no FormData and no S3 file. It passes on the darwin aarch64 lane of this build and in the darwin x64 jobs of main. Seven other test files failed once and passed on a retry. The tests of this PR passed on every lane.

In the build before it (131730, the same source), two other jobs were red, also outside this diff: ws-proxy.test.ts on Windows and serve-body-leak.test.ts on macOS, where the fixture could not bind a port. Both pass in build 131829.

LGTM — replaces a silent-data-loss TODO with the same self.failed = true + throw pattern the adjacent File read-error arm already uses; well-tested. The two inline nits are cosmetic and non-blocking.

Extended reasoning...

Overview

Two files touched. In src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs, the store::Data::S3(_) arm of FormDataContext::on_entry — previously a TODO that pushed nothing after the part headers — now sets self.failed = true and throws a TypeError naming the entry, exactly mirroring the adjacent store::Data::File read-error path (lines 3976-3979). The resolve_size() call above it is gated on !blob.is_s3() so a rejected entry keeps its unknown (NaN) size instead of being zeroed. In test/js/web/html/FormData-multipart-serialization.test.ts, a new describe block adds six tests covering Response/Request/fetch(), three S3 blob shapes via test.each, and the size side-effect.

Security risks

None. This turns a silent 0-byte upload into a synchronous TypeError before any network I/O. No new parsing of untrusted input, no auth/crypto/permissions surface. The error message interpolates the FormData entry name, which is already user-controlled and only ever displayed back to the same user.

Level of scrutiny

Low-to-medium. The native change is ~10 lines and follows the exact failure-path pattern already established in the same function for unreadable files: I confirmed from_dom_form_data checks context.failed after the forEach, drops the joiner (freeing pushed slices), and returns an empty blob (Blob.rs:976-982); callers check for the pending exception. on_entry early-returns on self.failed (line 3899) so subsequent entries after the S3 one are skipped and no double-throw occurs. blob.is_s3() (webcore_types.rs:426) checks the same store::Data::S3 discriminant the match arm uses, so the guard and the arm are consistent.

Other factors

The tests are hermetic (dummy S3 endpoint at 127.0.0.1:1, no S3 request is made; local Bun.serve({port: 0}) for the fetch case), assert the exact error class and message, and verify the negative contract (receivedBodies stays empty). The PR description states all six new tests fail on the released build and pass with the change, and that BUN_JSC_validateExceptionChecks=1 was run. The two inline findings are both nits: bun_fmt::quote for the entry name would render "/CRLF-containing names more cleanly, and the test.each matrix omits the new File([s3file], name) shape the description names — neither affects correctness of the fix and can be addressed in a follow-up if desired.

LGTM — both follow-ups (bun_core::fmt::quote for the entry name, the new File([s3file], ...) test row) landed and the comment trims look right.

What was reviewed:

  • The S3 arm now mirrors the File-read-error arm exactly (self.failed = true + throw), so from_dom_form_data drops the joiner and callers propagate the pending exception.
  • !blob.is_s3() guard on resolve_size() — verified it only skips the zero-write; the store match below still hits Data::S3.
  • name.to_slice() lifetime: the ZigStringSlice local outlives the format_args! borrow, and its Owned variant frees any UTF-16→UTF-8 allocation on drop.
  • Test hermeticity: the S3 endpoint is never dialed; the fetch case uses a local port: 0 server and asserts nothing was received.
Extended reasoning...

Overview

Two files. In src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs, the store::Data::S3(_) arm of FormDataContext::on_entry — previously a TODO that pushed nothing after the part headers — now sets self.failed = true and throws a TypeError naming the entry (via bun_core::fmt::quote) with a concrete remedy in the message. A one-line guard skips blob.resolve_size() for S3 stores so a rejected entry's size stays NaN instead of being zeroed. In test/js/web/html/FormData-multipart-serialization.test.ts, a new describe block adds eleven tests covering Response/Request/fetch, four S3-blob shapes, four entry-name quoting cases, and the size side-effect.

Security risks

None. The change converts silent data loss (0-byte upload accepted by the receiver) into an explicit TypeError before any network I/O. No new parsing, no new trust boundaries; the S3 credentials in the test are dummies and the endpoint (127.0.0.1:1) is never contacted because serialization fails first.

Level of scrutiny

Low-to-medium. The runtime change is ~7 lines and structurally identical to the neighbouring store::Data::File error path (lines 3974–3977): set failed, throw on the global, fall through to the trailing \r\n push, and let from_dom_form_data drop the joiner and return an empty blob when context.failed is set. throw_type_error returns a JsError that is intentionally discarded via let _ =, matching the File arm's let _ = global_this.throw_value(...). The ZigString::to_slice() → ZigStringSlice::slice() → fmt::quote(&[u8]) chain type-checks against the definitions in bun_core::string and bun_core::fmt, and the temporary is bound to a local so it outlives the borrow inside format_args!.

Other factors

I reviewed an earlier revision of this PR and left two nits (use bun_fmt::quote; add the new File([s3file], ...) test row). Both were addressed in a3c33a1, and 82ad489 trimmed the two comments the comment-cop bot flagged. All four inline threads are resolved. The bug-hunting system found nothing on the current revision. Tests are hermetic (local Bun.serve({ port: 0 }), no real S3), assert exact error class and message, and cover the variant matrix the PR description enumerates. The behavior change — throwing where the code previously produced silently-wrong output — is the conservative choice pending an async streaming path (#35792), and the error message tells the user exactly how to work around it.

resolve_size set the size of an S3-backed blob to 0. An S3 object has no
size before the download, and a slice already has its final window. Every
reader maps a size other than MAX_SIZE to a Range header, so a resolved
S3 blob requested `Range: bytes=N-N` and read one byte.

This broke the body stream of a Request or Response made from an S3 file
(.body, textStream(), HTMLRewriter, WebAssembly.compileStreaming), and
every read that came after Bun.inspect(request), expect().toHaveLength(),
structuredClone() or a FormData body.

The S3 arm of resolve_size and of resolved_size now keeps the size.
Body::Value::size feeds only the `Request (size)` and `Response (size)`
header of Bun.inspect. An S3 body printed `0 KB` because resolve_size had
set its size to 0. With the size left unknown, get_size_for_bindings
returns u64::MAX, which the size formatter prints as `0.0 ZB`.

Map the unknown size of an S3 blob to 0, the value a Locked body with no
size hint reports. The header of an S3 body does not change, and no other
body is affected.
Both test files had a copy of the server that plays the S3 endpoint. Move
it to test/js/bun/s3/s3-local-endpoint.ts.

The matcher assertions name the message of the length comparison, so a
throw for another reason does not pass. The bytes() reader is compared
with the payload, not with its length.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Comment thread src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs Outdated
The S3 arm of `resolve_size` set the size of the blob to 0. Each S3 reader
takes a known size as a window and sends a Range header, so the next read
sent `Range: bytes=0-0`. It got one byte of the object, or `InvalidRange`
for an object of 0 bytes.

`resolve_size` runs for `.body`, `textStream()`, `HTMLRewriter.transform()`
and `WebAssembly.compileStreaming()` of a body that holds an S3 file, for
`console.log()` of that Request or Response, for the length matchers of
`expect()`, for `structuredClone()` and for a FormData body. `.body` read
the whole object until 1.3.10.

The arm is now empty: the size of an S3 object stays unknown, and a slice
keeps its window. `resolved_size` answers the same way.

I built the other design for this defect to compare it with this PR: a body that streams the S3 part when the body is read (robobun/9ff482ed/formdata-s3-part-stream, no PR). A review of that branch found that it is not ready, and that this PR is the step to land first. Three findings from that work apply here.

1. A zero-length slice. On main, s3file.slice(0, 0) is a correct empty part, with no request. This PR makes it throw. A gate on blob.size.get() != 0 keeps it.

2. A size that another path set to 0. With that gate alone, an S3 file whose size another path wrote as 0 goes out as an empty part again. structuredClone(s3file) throws and leaves the size at 0:

const file = new Bun.S3Client({ endpoint: "http://127.0.0.1:9", accessKeyId: "k", secretAccessKey: "s", bucket: "b" }).file("o");
try { structuredClone(file); } catch {}
console.log(file.size); // 0 on 1.4.2. It was NaN before the call.

#43934 removes that write from Blob::resolve_size. With its source edit in this PR, or landed first, the gate is safe and the call-site guard !blob.is_s3() is not necessary.

3. Who gets the TypeError. SDK upload helpers put the file into a FormData themselves. On 1.4.2 each of these calls resolves with a 0-byte upload and no request to S3. I ran them against local servers:

  • openai.files.create({ file: s3file }) and openai.audio.transcriptions.create({ file: s3file })
  • anthropic.beta.files.upload({ file: s3file })
  • supabase.storage.from(bucket).upload(path, s3file)
  • pocketbase.collection(name).create({ doc: s3file })
  • hc(url).upload.$post({ form: { file: s3file } }) (hono/client)

With this PR they throw. The message tells the caller to change a formData.append() call, and these callers have none. They pass a buffered file to the SDK, for example new File([await s3file.bytes()], name).

Open items of the streaming branch, for a later decision to deliver the bytes:

  • 256 concurrent uploads of such a form hang, and 255 finish. Each upload holds a request slot of the HTTP thread while its S3 GET waits for one.
  • fetch(request, { headers }) sends the form with no Content-Type.
  • A later S3 part that fails before its request starts trips a debug assertion in ByteStream::on_data.
  • A Bun.serve response sends its head before the first object is requested. A missing object then resets the connection and does not reach error().

A zero-length slice of an S3 file has no bytes to read, so its part stays
empty, as on main. The serializing walk now only records that it met an S3
entry, and from_dom_form_data throws for it in a second walk, so the entries
it can serialize carry nothing for the refusal. The guard in front of
resolve_size() goes away: resolve_size() no longer writes an S3 size.

The message now names a File to pass instead of a formData.append() call,
because libraries build the FormData themselves.
They join the other tests of a body made from an S3 file, and use the S3
server of that block.
The HEAD test for a slice of an S3 file read only the two Content-Length
headers. It now reads the GET body and compares both headers with its
length.
The second walk now only copies the name of the first S3 entry, and the
TypeError is thrown once the walk is over, so nothing allocates in JS while
C++ iterates the entries and the refusal always ends in an exception.

Tests: the message names the first S3 file after entries the serializer can
write; the local S3 endpoint binds 127.0.0.1. Docs and the S3File JSDoc say
that a FormData body needs the bytes first.

Inline comments:
Review comments at @docs/runtime/s3.mdx:
- Line 606: Clarify the FormData behavior in the S3 runtime documentation and
the matching wording in the S3 type declarations: limit the TypeError claim to
non-empty S3File entries and state that zero-length S3 slices remain valid empty
parts.

Review comments at @packages/bun-types/s3.d.ts:
- Line 483: Use a defined filename in the S3File workaround by adding the
“upload” fallback when `file.name` may be undefined. Apply the same fallback in
the S3 FormData example in `docs/runtime/s3.mdx` and the FormData serialization
error message, then update the matching `remedy` test expectation.

Review comments at @src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:
- Around line 872-909: In FormDataContext and on_entry, store the name of the
first nonzero-size S3 entry when setting failed; initialize the stored name to
None in from_dom_form_data. Use that name to produce the existing TypeError
after serialization, and remove throw_for_s3_entry and its second DOMFormData
walk so the S3 check and name capture happen in one place.

The serializer kept two flags, and the second one meant something only
when the first one was set. The failure is now one enum. Its S3 variant
holds the Blob of the entry, so the second walk finds the name by that
pointer and no longer repeats the size test.
#46653 replaces #43934. This branch now has the same three source hunks
as #46653, so the two merge without a conflict in either order. The
tests of #43934 and its S3 stand-in are gone from this branch. The
FormData tests use the S3 server in test/packages/s3-server.
…e-checks

S3File.name is declared optional, so the old snippet failed with TS2345
under strict.
…and the docs

- throw_for_s3_entry takes &mut DOMFormData, like its caller.
- The tests send one request to each server before they read its log, so
  a request that was on its way is seen. New rows: an S3 file next to a
  missing file, in both orders. The size rows check the size directly.
- The docs name who throws, and keep the sentence about Response as it was.

Nothing blocking. The comments below are optional suggestions. There is no need to push a fix for them before merging.

Beyond the inline finding, I also checked the S3Entry(*const Blob) held across the two DOMFormData__forEach walks: the C++ loop in src/jsc/bindings/DOMFormData.cpp only iterates m_items (each holding a RefPtr<Blob>) and nothing between the walks enters JS or mutates the FormData, so the pointer is stable and the second walk finds the same impl(). The release path where find.name is None still throws (empty quoted name via unwrap_or_default), not a panic. The other resolve_size S3 consumers are unaffected: get_size returns NaN before resolving, get_exists_sync ignores size for S3, and ByteBlobLoader::setup is only reached from the Bytes arm.

Extended reasoning...

The change touches Blob.rs FormData serialization (new S3 refusal with a second-walk name lookup), the S3 arms of resolve_size/resolved_size, Body/RequestContext comments, the S3File .d.ts and docs, and adds a test block using the local s3-server harness; no security-sensitive surface. The one surviving finding is a nit about an untested behavioral side effect on S3 request bodies, and the pointer-lifetime and release-build fallback concerns examined here were ruled out from the C++ iteration code and the unwrap_or_default fallback.

This branch already had the three source hunks of #46653, with the same
text. The merge adds its tests in s3.test.ts and body.test.ts, so that
the change is covered whichever of the two lands first.

Beyond the inline findings, I also checked the raw *const Blob carried from the first DOMFormData__forEach walk into throw_for_s3_entry (src/runtime/webcore/Blob.rs:868-914): the pointer is the FormData entry's own JSBlob-wrapped Blob, the second walk runs before anything throws or re-enters JS, and the only other failure arm (the sync read_file ENOENT path) sets Thrown without reaching the S3 branch — so the address stays valid for the lookup.

Extended reasoning...

Two nit-level inline findings are posted (toHaveLength on S3File now reports u64::MAX, and a bare .toThrow() in body.test.ts). The pointer-lifetime concern around the two-walk design was examined and ruled out: no JS runs between the walks and the FormData owns the Blob.
