perf(calc): SUM/COUNT/AVERAGE over big ranges reuse constant-only results - #2691
SUM, COUNT and AVERAGE over a block that holds only constants (no formula, error value or spilled value) now remember the block's sum and count for the rest of the recalculation pass. A second formula reading the same block gets it from a lookup. A block with the same first cell and last column but more rows (a running total, SUM(A$1:A{r})) continues from the longest shorter block already known instead of starting over.
Why
Every such formula walked its whole range twice, so 20,000 rows of =A1/SUM(A$1:A$20000) cost 400 million cell visits.
Bit-for-bit
Results are identical to before, including the floating-point summation order: the remembered sum is the left-to-right, row-major sum from +0.0, and a longer block only adds the extra rows after it. It is used only when the running sum is exactly +0.0 at that point (not after a leading number such as SUM(1E16, A1:A3)), otherwise the old walk runs. Blocks with an error value, a formula, a spilled value, any spill found in the pass, or with iterative calculation on take the old path unchanged.
Numbers
Single pinned core, release build, recalc_all (the edit-triggered recalculation shows the same), instructions:u from perf stat:
New test aggregates_over_ranges_match_a_plain_fold_bit_for_bit: random sheet with numbers (including 1e16/-1e16 mixes), text, blanks, booleans, errors and formulas; running totals and random blocks, one or two blocks per call, with and without a leading number; every result compared bit by bit with a plain left-to-right fold, after a full recalculation and after 30 rounds of incremental edits. Disabling the +0.0 guard makes it fail.
Cross-run against the unmodified main build: a 300-row random workbook (numbers, text, booleans, errors, SEQUENCE spills, RANDBETWEEN, running totals, percent of total, random blocks, 25 rounds of edits), every stored value compared bit by bit, 12 seeds, all identical.
Open PRs #2319 and #2252 also edit PassHost::visit_range/used_range in recalc.rs; my new range_sum method sits between those two functions, so expect a trivial textual conflict with whichever merges second. No logic overlap: this change adds a method and a field and one early return in aggregate_area.
…ss (storytold#2681)
A block that holds only constants can't change during a pass, so its sum
and count are worked out once and reused by every formula that reads the
same block. A block that is the same rows from the top but longer (a
running total) continues the shorter block's sum, which is the same
additions in the same order as one walk from the start.

The evaluator can reuse cached sums and numeric-value counts for eligible constant-only ranges. PassHost stores and extends these results during recalculation. A deterministic test compares SUM, COUNT, and AVERAGE results with a cell-by-cell oracle.
Host gains an optional range_sum method. For non-single-cell ranges, aggregate_area adds a returned sum and count and skips cell traversal when the accumulator sum has a zero bit pattern.
PassHost caches eligible range sums and counts, reuses exact results, or extends shorter cached blocks. It bypasses caching during iteration and for sheets with spills calculated in the current pass. The regression test compares aggregate results with a cell-by-cell oracle across recalculation and edits.

Merge Risk: Low · up to f404a
Repeated COUNT formulas with multiple large ranges can miss part of the intended speed-up. Results remain correct, so this is mergeable with awareness of the performance gap.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to f404a
The cache is confined to one recalculation pass and preserves ordinary evaluation when eligibility cannot be established. No material security risk or expansion of authority was identified in the changed behavior.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Workbook formulas and ranges reach the shortcut through the existing evaluator. Its direct outcome is aggregate numeric results and dependent workbook calculations, not additional access to another workbook or service. Cache lifetime is pass-local, although published calculation results can outlive the pass; external consumption of those results was not established by the supplied evidence.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new method operates through the existing trusted Host using workbook-local sheet and range coordinates. The default implementation declines the shortcut, and an unavailable summary returns control to ordinary evaluation rather than granting additional authority or substituting a successful result.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Iterative calculation and newly recorded sheet spills bypass cached summaries. Stored spills, formulas, and errors disqualify affected ranges; encountering a disqualifying suffix returns None rather than a partial aggregate. Spill publication and dependent requeueing occur across a fresh-host recalculation boundary, preventing reuse after those workbook changes.

Explanation
All changes in the whole-PR diff (merge base 11bb673 to head f404a08) serve #2681. The changes are the Host::range_sum hook in eval.rs, the aggregate_area shortcut in eval/call.rs, the PassHost sums cache and range_sum implementation in recalc/pass_host.rs, and the focused test in tests.rs. Agg covers only Sum, Count and Average (eval/array.rs), so the shortcut does not affect MAX or MIN. No lookup-function (#2678), sort-function (#2679) or unrelated change appears in the diff.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #2681 proposes three fixes. The PR implements two of them for constant-only blocks.
Per-pass memo of (sum, count, first error) for constant-only blocks: implemented. PassHost::range_sum (crates/calc/src/recalc/pass_host.rs) caches results in sums, keyed by sheet, first cell and last column. It returns None for blocks with formulas, error values or spilled values, and for iterative calculation. Evaluator::aggregate_area (crates/calc/src/eval/call.rs) uses the cached result only when acc.sum.to_bits() == 0, which keeps the summation order.
Extension of the longest shorter same-start block for running totals: implemented. range_sum starts from known.range(..last).next_back() and adds only the remaining rows.
Walk once when no formula cell is still pending: not implemented. PassHost::visit_range is unchanged in the whole-PR diff. A range that holds formula cells still goes through the two walks, because range_sum returns None for any formula cell. The PR description also does not claim this change. The measured workloads in the issue use constant column A, so the reported speed-ups do not show whether ranges with formula cells also gain.
The previous assessment passed this issue. That assessment did not address proposed fix 3. This assessment revises that result.
The new test aggregates_over_ranges_match_a_plain_fold_bit_for_bit checks bit-exact results. It does not check that a formula-bearing range is walked once.
Resolution
Implement proposed fix 3 of #2681 for ranges that hold formula cells with no pending formula. Fold such a range in one walk in PassHost::visit_range (crates/calc/src/recalc/pass_host.rs) or in the aggregate path, and keep the left-to-right, row-major summation order. Add a test that counts cell visits for a SUM or AVERAGE over a calculated formula column, and confirm that the result matches the old path bit for bit. If the author decides fix 3 is out of scope for this PR, state that in the PR description and link a follow-up issue for it.

The fixed fixture produces 115 shorter-range extensions but zero exact cache hits. The duplicated blocks do not guarantee an exact hit because range_sum runs only while the accumulator is +0.0. A regression in the exact-hit branch can therefore pass this test.

Results are identical in every case. #2686 compares against the old full-sort code bit for bit (lengths 0 to 4096, ties, -0.0, NaN, inf). #2691 compares against a plain fold, bit for bit, over full recalculations and 30 edit rounds and against the unmodified build on random workbooks with errors, text, spills and RANDBETWEEN. #2694 and #2696 compare byte-identical dumps of all values, spill and spill_ranges against the old build on about 2,000 and 1,500 random workbooks with overlapping and blocked spills, iterative calculation on and off, and edit batches of 1 to 76 cells. The measurements use synthetic workbooks.

Reviewed the cache key, pass lifetime, aggregation entry point, sparse traversal, spill/formula/error fallbacks and incremental graph handling. The cache is recreated for each PassHost; constant cells cannot change within that pass. Prefix extension preserves row-major addition order, and the positive-zero guard avoids regrouping a nonzero accumulator. I found no new concrete correctness defect in these paths.
Local validation: two dependency-free Rust harness tests passed (0 failed). They execute the exact range_sum method body with lightweight workbook/store scaffolding: repeated exact hits, ascending and descending prefix requests, distinct widths, bitwise sums/counts, and refusal for formulas, errors, existing spills, new-pass spills and iteration. This is method-level validation, not a local calc integration test. The previously noted deterministic exact-hit coverage gap in the committed test is already discussed in the existing review; I am not duplicating it as a finding.
CI evidence: inspected the successful gate job log: 2,525 tests passed, including aggregates_over_ranges_match_a_plain_fold_bit_for_bit; one timing-sensitive range scaling test skipped. All ten gate steps passed, including fmt, Clippy and wasm.
The reported speedups remain author measurements for repeated identical or ascending-prefix constant ranges. They do not establish the same gains for disjoint ranges, formula-heavy ranges, iterative workbooks, or spill-heavy sheets (which conservatively fall back). The uncommitted cross-build random-workbook oracle remains an author claim; I did not independently run it. The held-back name/reference optimization is not needed for this cache's invalidation model.
Local Cargo validation was blocked before compilation: the pinned egui source was unavailable offline, and the isolated crate build could not download missing crates because the TLS client credentials were unavailable. No security settings were changed. This is a COMMENT because local integration validation and independent performance reproduction remain incomplete.
eval.rs and recalc.rs were split into submodules; re-applied the range_sum hunks in eval.rs, eval/call.rs and recalc/pass_host.rs.

Merged current main into this branch. eval.rs and recalc.rs were split into submodules on main, so the merge conflicted. I re-applied the range_sum changes by hand: the Host::range_sum default in eval.rs, the shortcut in aggregate_area (eval/call.rs), and the per-pass sums cache plus range_sum impl in recalc/pass_host.rs. The diff against main is again only those changes plus the new test. fmt, clippy -D warnings and the gridcraft-calc tests pass, including the bit-exact block-sum test.

Allow COUNT to reuse later cached ranges.
If the first cached range has a nonzero sum, aggregate_area sets acc.sum to that sum. The zero-bit gate then rejects the next eligible cache lookup, so COUNT walks that range instead. This affects repeated multi-range COUNT formulas, but it does not change the result because COUNT returns only acc.count.

Validation on the PR head (f404a083): cargo fmt --check passed on Linux, and WIN_CARGO_TIMEOUT=1200 /home/harrison/firstmate/data/win-cargo.sh <worktree> gc-review-2691 test -p gridcraft-calc aggregates_over_ranges_match_a_plain_fold_bit_for_bit passed on Windows (1 test). That regression compares SUM/COUNT/AVERAGE results bitwise with a row-major fold on full recalc and 30 edit rounds, including nonzero leading values and errors. git merge-tree --write-tree upstream/main HEAD was clean. I did not run the full calc/engine suites, Excel, or a benchmark, and there is no dedicated new-spill aggregate case in the test I ran. Open PR #2757 also changes crates/calc/src/eval.rs for text-criteria caching; it appears adjacent but is a separate path.
