perf(calc): find formulas a cleared cell may unblock from a set of #SPILL! cells - #2696
When a cell is cleared, Calc::cells_changed looked at every formula in the graph to find formulas showing #SPILL! that the empty cell might unblock, run did the same for each area a formula stopped spilling over, and each changed cell scanned a 64 x 64 window of stored cells for #SPILL! values. Calc now keeps the set of cells whose value is #SPILL! (filled in rebuild like circular is, updated by cells_changed and by the write-back of a run) and takes all three kinds of candidates from it. With no #SPILL! cell on the workbook the loops cost nothing. Every entry is checked against the workbook before it is used, so a stale entry can't seed anything.
Why
Clearing one cell in a workbook with 100,000 formulas spent about 10 ms walking the graph (about 100 ms per Delete at a million formulas), and each changed cell paid about 0.5 us for the window scan even on sheets without spills.
Numbers
Release build, taskset to one core, three runs each:
Scenario
Before
After
100,000 formulas in column B, clear one cell
10.0-11.0 ms
0.0 ms (under 0.1 ms)
20,000 changed cells, no spills, cells_changed
19.8-21.8 ms (921.7 M instructions:u in the whole run)
Candidates are the same cells as before: stored cells with #SPILL! in the 64 x 64 window above and left of the changed cell, and formulas with #SPILL! above and left of an emptied cell or freed area. They come out in row-major order instead of graph hash order; the pass sorts the dirty set before calculating, so the order of seeds doesn't matter.
How it was verified
Cross-run oracle: a seeded generator builds workbooks with many overlapping and blocked spills (SEQUENCE, TRANSPOSE, SORT, spill-range readers, constants typed into areas, cleared cells, a second sheet, iterative calculation on and off, a dense crossing mode), runs recalc_all and 12 batches of edits (1-4 and 17-76 changed cells, including clears) and dumps every cell value, spill and spill_ranges. Old and new binaries produced byte-identical dumps on 1,500 seeds x 2 iterative settings x 2 generator modes. Disabling either candidate source in a test build makes dozens of seeds differ, so the oracle does exercise them.
New test: clearing a cell unblocks the array above and left of it, typing over the area blocks it again, and edits far away don't disturb it. All 91 gridcraft-calc tests pass; cargo fmt --all --check and cargo clippy -p gridcraft-calc --all-targets -- -D warnings are clean.
Overlap with open PRs
#2483, #2490, #2308 and #1954 edit spill handling in recalc.rs (#2483 the same cells_changed block). This PR only changes how candidates are found, not which are used, and is independent of #2683 (the spill read index, #2694); recalc.rs merges without conflicts; only the new tests at the end of tests.rs conflict (both append), which is trivial to resolve. I will rebase on whatever merges first.
Fixed recalculation of array formulas when cells blocking their spill ranges are cleared or edited. Spill results now update when space becomes available, including when the blocking cell is above or to the left.
Changes to cells outside an affected spill range no longer disturb its results.
Improved spill-error lookups during recalculation, including in worksheets with large populated regions.
…f #SPILL! cells (storytold#2684)
Clearing a cell walked every formula in the graph, and each changed cell
scanned a 64 x 64 window of stored cells, to find formulas showing
#SPILL!. Calc now keeps the set of cells whose value is #SPILL! (filled
in rebuild, kept up to date by cells_changed and the write-back of a
run) and takes those candidates from it. The same set replaces the walk
over the graph in run for areas a formula stopped spilling over. Each
entry is checked against the workbook before it is used.

Walkthrough
Calc now tracks cells with cached #SPILL! values. Recalculation uses indexed lookups to find spill-error candidates when cells or spill areas become available, replacing scans over stored cells and formula graph nodes. Tests cover blocked spills, distant edits, and a timing probe.
Calc initializes and rebuilds an index of cells with cached #SPILL! values. Changed cells and calculated results update the index.
Use indexed candidates during recalculation crates/calc/src/recalc.rs, crates/calc/src/tests.rs
Recalculation uses bounded index lookups instead of scanning stored cells or graph nodes for spill-error candidates. Tests cover clearing and re-entering blockers, a distant edit, a large spill-error field, and an ignored timing probe.
The previously identified bulk-edit slowdown is addressed, and no new merge-blocking regression was established. This change is ready to merge after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 5f3fc
Repeated what-if evaluations can produce incorrect spreadsheet results because cached state is not reset with each workbook snapshot. The inspected changes do not introduce new access or privileges, and the identified impact is confined to calculations within the affected document.
Retained concerns
Medium · architecture · inferred: Trial restores its base workbook for every evaluation but reuses a mutable Calc. If one trial unblocks a base #SPILL! anchor, write-back removes that anchor from the index. A later trial restores the blocked base value without restoring the index entry, so candidate discovery can miss the anchor unless another dependency or dynamic path schedules it. Repeated blank data-table inputs clearing the same blocker can therefore disagree, and the resulting values are written into the document as static table results. The base implementation scanned current workbook values instead. This breaks the ownership relationship between a workbook snapshot and its derived calculation state; stale-entry validation does not repair missing entries.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected exposure is document-local calculation integrity: isolated what-if workbooks can produce incorrect values that data-table evaluation writes back to the same document. The source trace does not demonstrate cross-document access, credential exposure or privilege gain.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The inspected document-edit and what-if callers retain their existing document-owned Workbook and Calc pairing. The new index introduces no public query interface or authority transition; the identified failure concerns snapshot lifecycle within that existing boundary.

Explanation
Issue [#2684] requires: (1) a set of cells whose value is #SPILL!, filled in rebuild and updated in cells_changed and in the run write-back; (2) unblock candidates taken from that set instead of a full graph scan; (3) no 64 x 64 window scan when no spill exists; (4) identical results, with each entry checked against the workbook before use. The previous review passed this at head 72236e4. The incremental diff to head 5f3fcc8 changes the code that carries these requirements. Calc.spill_errors changed type from BTreeSet<Key> to SpillErrors. Graph, Intervals, Node, Key, FxHasher, and PassHost moved out of recalc.rs into recalc/graph.rs and recalc/pass_host.rs. The incremental diff output is truncated at 16000 bytes. It does not show the SpillErrors definition, the rebuild population, the cells_changed or write-back updates, or the unblock candidate lookups. The new module contents were not read. The added test an_edit_far_left_of_many_spill_errors_does_not_disturb_them covers a far edit and a blocked-then-cleared formula. It does not show the candidate source or the window-scan removal at head. The previous PASS cannot carry forward, because the index type and its location changed. The current evidence does not establish compliance or non-compliance.
Resolution
Provide the full diff from the merge base to head for crates/calc/src/recalc.rs. Also provide the contents of crates/calc/src/recalc/graph.rs and crates/calc/src/recalc/pass_host.rs, or narrowed hunks that show: the SpillErrors type and its methods; the rebuild population; the updates in cells_changed and in the run write-back; and the unblock candidate and changed-cell lookups, including the workbook check. Also confirm that the moved Graph, Intervals, and PassHost code is unchanged in behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The incremental diff from 72236e4 to 5f3fcc8 moves Graph, Intervals, Node, Key, FxHasher, and PassHost out of recalc.rs into recalc/graph.rs and recalc/pass_host.rs. It also adds the helper spills_as_before in pass_host.rs and changes the spill_errors field type. The PR description does not mention a module split. It states that the change touches only candidate discovery in recalc.rs. The purpose of the split and of spills_as_before is not shown. The new tests in tests.rs (the spill_error_field fixture, an_edit_far_left_of_many_spill_errors_does_not_disturb_them, and the ignored spill_error_field_probe) relate to the spill-candidate path and support [#2684]. The probe comment states 1,040,000 cells, but the fixture creates 64 x 16,284 = 1,042,176 cells. This is a minor comment error. The AI-generated raw summary reports recalc.rs +91/-24 and tests.rs +76/-0. These counts do not match the diff, so the raw summary was not used as evidence. Whether the module split serves [#2684] cannot be decided from the available evidence.
Resolution
Provide the contents of the new submodules, or the relevant hunks, and the reason for the split. Also state whether the split and spills_as_before are required by [#2684]. If they are not required, the review needs to decide whether they belong in this pull request or in a separate change.

Cover the left-of-cell candidate path with a real unblock.
C1 = SEQUENCE(1,3) is blocked by D1, not by B2. Clearing B2 cannot test its recovery. A20 is below B2; it recovers through its dependency on B1, not through unblock_candidates. A regression in the candidate search for a spill anchored left of the cleared cell could pass this test.
Add a horizontal spill whose blocker is the cleared cell, then assert the recovered spill values.

Results are identical in every case. #2686 compares against the old full-sort code bit for bit (lengths 0 to 4096, ties, -0.0, NaN, inf). #2691 compares against a plain fold, bit for bit, over full recalculations and 30 edit rounds and against the unmodified build on random workbooks with errors, text, spills and RANDBETWEEN. #2694 and #2696 compare byte-identical dumps of all values, spill and spill_ranges against the old build on about 2,000 and 1,500 random workbooks with overlapping and blocked spills, iterative calculation on and off, and edit batches of 1 to 76 cells. The measurements use synthetic workbooks.

Reviewed spill_errors initialization, changed-cell insertion/removal, invalid-formula handling, result write-back and late spill-block insertion, plus both unblock-candidate call sites. Current workbook values are rechecked, so stale entries do not themselves seed a formula. Candidate ordering is normalized again before evaluation. I found no new concrete result mismatch in those paths.
Local validation: one dependency-free Rust harness test passed (0 failed), executing the exact spill_errors_in and unblock_candidates method bodies with lightweight workbook/store/graph scaffolding. Results matched an independent full scan across row/column boundary cases, multiple/missing sheets, stale and absent stored entries, non-error values, and graph membership. This checks candidate selection, not synchronization through a complete edit/recalc run.
CI evidence: inspected the successful gate job log: 2,525 tests passed, including clearing_a_cell_unblocks_the_arrays_above_and_left_of_it; one timing-sensitive range scaling test skipped. All ten gate steps passed, including fmt, Clippy and wasm.
The existing unresolved candidate-search thread and horizontal-unblock test-coverage discussion remain open; I am not duplicating them. The reported no-spill/low-error synthetic benchmarks do not establish behavior under dense spill-error populations or the same benefit for every paste. The timing/instruction counts and cross-build random-workbook oracle remain author measurements/claims. The change is independent of #2694 and of the held-back lookup/name work, although the surrounding recalc edits still need integration review when combined.
Local Cargo validation was blocked before compilation: the pinned egui source was unavailable offline, and the isolated crate build could not download missing crates because the TLS client credentials were unavailable. No security settings were changed. This is a COMMENT because local integration validation and independent performance reproduction remain incomplete.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Follow-up: REQUEST_CHANGES supersedes my earlier COMMENT disposition. I independently verified the introduced performance regression described in the existing candidate-search thread; no duplicate inline finding is being added.
The replaced CellStore::iter_range bounds each row's BTreeMap by the requested column range before yielding cells. The new spill_errors_in instead takes every spill-error key in the row band, then rejects columns in a filter. For an edit in column A with spill errors at zero-based rows 0..64 and columns 100..16383, each window lookup visits 1,058,460 irrelevant keys and produces no candidates; the old per-row column-bounded walk yields zero. Repeating narrow bulk edits repeats that new scan. Such a population fits the sheet grid and can arise from dense blocked array formulas; the unrelated formulas need not be recalculated by those edits. This is an introduced loss of the old column bound, not a pre-existing broad graph scan or only a hypothetical timing concern.
Focused local validation: an optimized Rust probe populated those keys and executed the production BTreeSet range/filter expression. Across 100 narrow window queries it took 735.9671 ms, versus 0.2455 ms for the base algorithm's row map plus column-bounded BTreeSet traversal. Both returned zero matches. These are isolated query measurements with equivalent ordered-container scaffolding, not a full workbook benchmark. The deterministic comparison is 1,058,460 rejected keys per new query versus zero yielded cells in the old column-bounded scan. The earlier exact-method candidate correctness harness also passed; correctness of returned candidates does not remove this performance regression.
Please preserve a column-bounded window lookup as requested in the existing thread. The earlier CI results still stand, but the author's no-spill/low-error benchmark does not exercise this introduced dense-error case. No independently reproduced result-value mismatch is claimed.
… band
The spill-error set was ranged by rows only and filtered by column afterwards, so an edit in
column A walked every #SPILL! cell to its right in the same rows. Each row now keeps its own
column set and a window lookup takes one column range per row that has an entry. Results are
unchanged. Also covers an array spilling right over the cleared cell.
