perf(calc): index spill areas so cell and range reads don't scan every spill - #2694
Reading a cell or a range during a recalculation pass looked at every spill (dynamic-array result) computed so far, and cells_changed looked at every spill range of the sheet for each changed cell. Both now go through a small spatial index (crates/calc/src/spill_index.rs, spill areas registered in 16 x 16 cell blocks), so a read only looks at the spills near it. Results do not change.
Why
With many spill arrays on a sheet, every cell and range read paid for all of them: 20,000 =MAX(A:B) rows took 7 ms with no spills and over a second with 2,000 =SEQUENCE(50) anchors elsewhere on the sheet.
Numbers
Release build, taskset to one core, perf stat -e instructions:u, three runs each (the instruction counts agree to 0.01%):
paste of 20,000 cells with 2,000 spills, cells_changed
146-150 ms, 2.67 G
46-47 ms, 1.02 G
The remaining time in the last row is the real recalculation and a scan that #2684 covers.
How it keeps the results identical
A cell covered by one spill, or a range meeting spills that don't overlap inside the range, is answered from the index.
Where several spills cover the same cell, or overlap inside a range read, the code falls back to the old order (the pass's spill map iteration order: first wins for a cell read, last wins for a range read).
Areas spanning more than 1024 blocks (e.g. a full-height SEQUENCE(1048576), 65,536 blocks) are not registered in blocks; each lookup tests them directly.
In cells_changed the sheet's spill ranges are indexed only for pastes of more than 16 changed cells; seeds come out in anchor order as before.
How it was verified
Cross-run oracle: a seeded generator builds workbooks with many overlapping spills (SEQUENCE, TRANSPOSE, SORT, spill-range readers, ranges, constants dropped into spill areas, a second sheet, iterative calculation on and off, a dense crossing mode), runs recalc_all and 12 batches of edits (1-4 and 17-76 changed cells) and dumps every cell value, spill and spill_ranges. Old and new binaries gave byte-identical dumps on about 2,000 seeds with the final generator.
A temporary build that ran the old scan next to the index inside cell_value and range_values and asserted equal results ran 600 seeds x 4 variants with no mismatch, including the overlap fallbacks.
New unit tests for the index and for a paste over many spills; all 93 gridcraft-calc tests pass; cargo fmt --all --check and cargo clippy -p gridcraft-calc --all-targets -- -D warnings are clean.
Overlap with open PRs
The change is confined to the lookups and a new file, but it touches regions other PRs edit: #1954 (spill reads in cell_value/range_values and the PassHost fields) and #2319 (the pass loop, PassHost) will conflict textually, and #2483 edits cells_changed and spill_blocked nearby. If #2483 changes which overlapping spill counts, the fallbacks here use the same spill map order as the code they replace, so that order is the place to adjust. I will rebase on whatever merges first.
…ill (storytold#2683)
A cell read and a range read looked at every spill computed so far in
the pass, and cells_changed looked at every spill range of the sheet for
each changed cell. A spatial index (16 x 16 cell blocks) now finds the
areas covering a cell or meeting a range. Where areas overlap, the one
that counted before (first/last in the pass's spill map order) still
counts.

The calculation crate adds a block-based index for spill areas. Pass recalculation and changed-cell processing use the index to locate relevant spills. Tests cover index queries and recalculation after pastes that affect spills.
Changes: Spill lookup indexing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Build the spill index crates/calc/src/lib.rs, crates/calc/src/spill_index.rs
Adds a block-based index for spill rectangles, with insertion, removal, cell-coverage, and range-intersection queries. Tests cover overlap, replacement, empty areas, and indexing-cost thresholds.
Index pass spills and reads crates/calc/src/recalc/pass_host.rs
PassHost updates the index as spill results change. Cell and range reads query it to find relevant spills. Existing handling remains for overlapping spills and larger hit sets. Range visitation checks the index for pass spills.
Find affected spills after edits crates/calc/src/recalc.rs, crates/calc/src/tests.rs
When more than 16 cells change and indexing is estimated to be worthwhile, the calculation indexes existing spill ranges to find affected anchors. Tests cover pastes beside and over spills, including multiple spills and multiple worksheets.
No merge-blocking spill-lookup issue was identified.

Explanation
The title clearly summarizes the main change: adding spill-area indexing to avoid scanning every spill during cell and range reads. It omits the related cells_changed optimization, but it remains specific and accurate.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#2683] Requirement: index spill areas so cell reads, range reads, and cells_changed visit only relevant spills, with identical results.
Cell reads: PassHost::cell_value calls SpillIndex::covering. Cover::One returns the single covering spill. Cover::Many falls back to the first match in spills iteration order, as the old loop did. Taint handling is unchanged.
Range reads: PassHost::range_values calls SpillIndex::meeting, which visits only blocks the range touches, plus the short list of big areas. Where more than 16 hits meet the range, or two non-empty hits overlap inside it, the code walks spills in its iteration order (last wins), matching the old result. Iterative taint checks use the indexed hits. The has_sheet fast path replaces the old spills.keys() scan.
cells_changed: Calc::cells_changed indexes a sheet's spill_ranges only for batches above 16 changed cells, and only when indexing_pays supports it. Otherwise it keeps the original scan. Seeds are sorted by anchor, as before. A sheet with no spill ranges skips indexing because index_spills requires a non-empty area set.
Tests: spill_index.rs has lookup, removal, big-area, empty-area, and scan-equivalence tests on mixed shapes. recalc.rs tests the per-sheet indexing choice. tests.rs adds paste and overlap tests. These cover the required behavior.
Not verified here: I did not run the tests or the timing runs. I did not check every unchanged spills mutation site outside the diff. The issue gives an expected time (about 10 ms) for the 2,000-anchor case. The PR reports 74-80 ms, down from 1160-1183 ms. The issue states this as an expectation, not an acceptance criterion, so it does not fail the assessment.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed code serves [#2683]. crates/calc/src/spill_index.rs adds the spatial index. crates/calc/src/recalc/pass_host.rs maintains the index alongside spills and uses it in cell_value and range_values. Index removals occur at the same points where spills entries are removed. crates/calc/src/recalc.rs applies the index in cells_changed and adds a test for its per-sheet choice. crates/calc/src/lib.rs declares the new module. crates/calc/src/tests.rs adds paste and overlap tests for the changed paths, plus an ignored timing probe. The rest of the diff, including spill_blocked and the pass loop, changes only where needed to keep spills and the index in step. No unrelated product behavior is evident in the reviewed diff.

The measurements use synthetic workbooks.

Reviewed index insertion/removal alongside the pass spill map, iterative removal, range overlays, overlapping-spill fallback order, and the >16-cell edit path. I found no new concrete result mismatch beyond matters already under review.
Local validation: a dependency-free harness included the exact spill_index.rs source and its two tests, plus an independent 3,000-round mutation/query comparison against a full rectangle scan: 3 tests passed, 0 failed. It covered replacement/removal, multiple sheets, empty dimensions, block boundaries and overlap. Address helpers retained their production bodies with serialization derives removed; the production hasher was retained. This validates index queries, not the entire recalc/overlap write-back integration.
CI evidence: inspected the successful gate job log: 2,527 tests passed, including many_spills_are_read_and_blocked_by_a_paste and the index tests; one timing-sensitive range scaling test skipped. All ten gate steps passed, including fmt, Clippy and wasm.
The existing unresolved spill-registration thread remains relevant; I am not posting a duplicate finding. The benchmark uses many modest spills and nearby reads. Large/tall spill registration, dense overlapping candidates (which deliberately fall back to map order), and allocation cost are different workloads. The reported timings/instruction counts and temporary cross-build oracle are author evidence, not independently reproduced results. No dependency on the held-back lookup/name work was found.
Local Cargo validation was blocked before compilation: the pinned egui source was unavailable offline, and the isolated crate build could not download missing crates because the TLS client credentials were unavailable. No security settings were changed. This is a COMMENT because local integration validation and independent performance reproduction remain incomplete.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Follow-up: REQUEST_CHANGES supersedes my earlier COMMENT disposition. I independently verified the introduced performance regression described in the existing spill-registration thread; no duplicate inline finding is being added.
For a valid full-height single-column spill, the new >16-changed-cell path registers 65,536 blocks before testing even an unrelated edit. The index is local to cells_changed, so the allocation/registration work repeats for each such paste. The base code simply performs one rectangle-containment check per spill per changed cell. A1=SEQUENCE(1048576) is within the current SEQUENCE dimensions and 10,000,000-cell cap; a 17-cell paste in column F need not touch that spill at all. This is introduced extra work for an admitted workbook, rather than an unproven general indexing risk or a pre-existing scan cost.
Focused local validation: an optimized dependency-free Rust probe used the exact production SpillIndex source, production address-helper bodies (serialization derives removed), and production hasher. Index registration for that rectangle took 15.0248 ms, then 17 unrelated queries took 0.0009 ms. The base containment algorithm took 0.0381 ms for 1,000 batches of 17 checks (zero matches). These are isolated method/algorithm measurements, not end-to-end workbook timing; the deterministic evidence is 65,536 newly populated blocks versus 17 old containment checks per single-spill batch.
Please address the existing thread by bounding registration or falling back to the old containment scan for oversized areas. The earlier correctness-harness and CI results still stand, but do not cover this registration regression. No independently reproduced result-value mismatch is claimed.
… less than testing them
A full-height column spill takes 65,536 blocks to register, which a 17-cell paste elsewhere
never needed. A sheet's spill areas are now indexed only when their block count is below what
testing each area against each changed cell would cost; otherwise the plain containment check
runs, as before. Results are unchanged.

Merged current main: the import lines in recalc.rs and pass_host.rs conflicted because upstream replaced glob imports with explicit ones. Kept upstream's explicit imports and added the spill index imports; calc tests, engine spill tests, clippy and fmt pass.
A full-height column spill took 65,536 block registrations, on every pass
that produced it. Areas over 1024 blocks are now tested directly by each
lookup instead. Adds a randomized comparison against a scan of all areas.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Pushed 6c912d2. The paste path was already guarded by the cost rule from the previous push (a 17-cell paste beside A1=SEQUENCE(1048576) no longer registers anything). What remained was the per-pass index: it still registered the 65,536 blocks of a full-height spill every time a pass produced it. Areas spanning more than 1024 blocks are now kept in a short list that each lookup tests directly, and they cost nothing in the paste-time decision.
Instructions (instructions:u, one core, release, millions; base = upstream/main / previous head / this head):
mixed (that plus the tall spill) recalc_all: 733,818 / 2,382 / 2,348; 20,000-cell paste: 1,458 / 377 / 331
Tests: a randomized comparison of the index against a scan of every area (small, thin, tall, wide, empty, two sheets, replace/remove, 3,000 steps), checked to fail if the direct list is dropped; a paste over small and tall spills together. fmt and clippy -D warnings clean, gridcraft-calc tests pass.

Use each sheet’s lookup count for spill-index selection.
249-275: Minor · Performance & Scalability · Quick win
Use each sheet’s lookup count for spill-index selection.
Calc::cells_changed accepts keys from multiple sheets, but it passes the full batch length to indexing_pays for every sheet. A sheet with one changed cell can therefore build a block index as if it had lookups for the entire batch. This can add unnecessary registration work.
indexing_pays counts only areas within BIG_AREA_BLOCKS; oversized areas go to SheetAreas::big and remain direct checks. Keep the batch-size gate, but pass the lookup count for the current sheet.

…cells
A batch spread over several sheets used its total length for every sheet, so a
one-cell sheet with many spills built the block index as if it had the whole
batch's lookups.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Fixed in bdbd29e (CodeRabbit's note on cells_changed). The index decision used the length of the whole batch for every sheet, so a sheet with a single changed cell and many spills was indexed as if it had all of the batch's lookups. The batch-size gate (more than 16 changed cells) is unchanged, but indexing_pays now gets the number of changed cells of that sheet, counted once per call. The decision is a small helper, index_spills, with a unit test (5000-cell batch: indexed when 5000 of the cells are on the sheet, walked when 1 is). Results are unchanged: the existing oracle and mixed-shape tests pass untouched, plus a new two-sheet paste test (5000 cells on one sheet, one cell over one of 1500 spills on the other). Instructions on that scenario (taskset, perf stat instructions:u, test incl. setup): 871.39M before, 870.86M after, i.e. about 530k fewer, roughly 350 per spill that is no longer indexed for nothing. clippy --all-targets, fmt and the calc tests are clean.
