Excel-saved PivotCharts opened empty, or with a stray grand total bar, and charts whose automatic title had been deleted showed "Series1" as a title.

Excel often saves a PivotChart series with <c:f> formulas that only approximate its PivotTable. In a set of 11 Excel-saved fleet reports, every series of a combo PivotChart pointed at the PivotTable's corner cell (Graph!$J$2), and other charts used a block that takes in the grand total row (Summary!$B$5:$B$13 for 8 cached points). Excel draws a PivotChart from its PivotTable, so the cached points are what it shows. GridCraft evaluated the formulas.

What changed

Most changes are in crates/xlsx/src/chart.rs.

  • PivotChart series (charts with c:pivotSource). When the cells a series' categories or values refer to don't hold their cached points (numCache, strCache, or the innermost level of a multiLvlStrCache), the series plots the cached points as array constants, and the cached name replaces the name reference. A literal name is saved as plain text with its doubled quotes read back as one (Sales "East", not Sales ""East""), in chart and chartex parts alike (literal_text). Points missing from the cache become #N/A (numbers) or "" (text), so later points keep their positions. The check needs every sheet's cells, so read_chart returns each PivotChart series' cache (PivotSeriesCache) and plot_pivot_caches runs in read_xlsx once the sheets are read. A reference stays live when it has one cell per point and each cell shows its point: numbers within rounding, text as is, and a number cache leaves out cells without a number. This also catches the corner-cell pattern when the PivotTable has one row item, where the corner cell and the cache both have one point. A multiLvlStrRef block of more than one level (Graph!$A$4:$B$7 for 4 points) is compared by its innermost level only: the last column of a block with a row per point, or the last row of one with a column per point. When that level holds the cache, the series stays live: its category and name references are kept, and the series is marked innermost_categories (a new #[serde(default)] field on the model Series) so the renderer draws only the innermost column or row, one label per point, instead of every cell of the block. A save writes such categories as a multiLvlStrRef whose multiLvlStrCache has ptCount = the point count and one <c:lvl> of cell texts per level, innermost first (multi_level_data), so a reopened PivotChart sets the flag again. main wrote the block as a strRef with a flattened 8-point cache. Categories without the flag are written as before. When the innermost level doesn't hold the cache, the block is stale like any other reference and plots the cache's innermost level. A one-level reference whose cells hold the cache stays live. Series of ordinary charts are left live. Refreshing the PivotTable rebinds the chart to live cells, as before (rebind_charts; parse_chart_link already ignores the [Book.xlsx] prefix).

  • autoTitleDeleted. A chart with no <c:title> and <c:autoTitleDeleted val="1"/> opens with its title off (title: Some("")), instead of showing the automatic title, the lone series' name. On save, an automatic title (None) now writes autoTitleDeleted val="0"; it used to write 1.

  • Array-constant series through a save. The array constants above exposed two older bugs:

Literals are now read by index with ptCount (read_points). numLit is written by parsing the array constant with gridcraft_formula::parse, so a gap stays a gap; strLit keeps main's writer (split_array_items, fix(xlsx): saving splits a literal chart category that contains a comma or semicolon #519), which already keeps text with ", , or ; as one point. Literals from other writers that main reads still load: a missing, unreadable or too small ptCount gives way to the points present, and points without an idx go in document order.

  • Number format of literal values. The model Series gets number_format: Option<String> (#[serde(default)]), read from the formatCode of a numLit, or of the numCache behind cached points, and written back as the numLit's formatCode (it was always General). The chart renderer (crates/chart/src/resolve.rs) uses it only when the values are an array constant. References still use their first cell's format, so a series rebound to live cells on refresh isn't affected by a leftover value.

Measured

gridcraft-cli check (release build) on the 11 reports, this branch and its base main 84acf62 alike: 261,528 formula cells, 261,528 matched, 0 mismatched, 0 no oracle; round trip: 8 of 11 files differ, all in the package category (lost chartStyle/chartColorStyle relationships, 16 such lines on each build). Those package differences predate this PR. Command: cargo build --release -p gridcraft-cli && gridcraft-cli check /tmp/gridcraft-try/sheets/downloads/*.xlsx, run on both builds. None of the 11 reports has a multiLvlStrRef. This change doesn't touch calculation. Saving the 11 reports with gridcraft-cli convert writes the same xl/charts/chart*.xml parts as the branch did before the value check, so the charts below are unchanged by it.

Screenshots of the desktop app before and after:

Chart main this branch
Aggressive Driving › Summary (combo PivotChart, every series at Graph!$J$2) empty 4 series, 13 categories, as in Excel
Speeding Violations › Summary (combo bar + line) empty bars and line plotted; line labels and secondary axis show 5.36%, 10.00% (the cache's 0.00%)
Active Engine Faults › Summary (combo, secondary axis) empty plotted
Costliest Assets › Summary, Maintenance Type › Summary (block includes the Total row) 9 bars, the last one the grand total 8 bars, labelled $1,010, $185 (the cache's "$"#,##0)
Watchdog Report › Report (pie, autoTitleDeleted val="1") title "Series1" no title

Saving Costliest Assets and reading xl/charts/chart1.xml back: c:pivotSource is kept, and categories and values are written as strLit/numLit with all 8 points and the numLit keeps formatCode [$-409]"$"#,##0.

Verification

  • pivot_charts_plot_their_cached_points_when_the_references_do_not_cover_them (crates/xlsx/src/tests/chart_read_tests.rs, new). It covers a combo PivotChart whose formulas all point at the corner cell, quoted text in categories, a gap in a line series, a grand-total block whose cache format is kept through a save, references whose cells hold their cache (kept live, no format of their own), the same series in a non-pivot chart (kept live), and a write/read round trip that keeps quotes and gaps.
  • a_one_point_pivot_chart_at_the_corner_cell_plots_its_cache (new). It reads a whole package with read_xlsx: a PivotChart with one point whose formulas all point at a corner cell holding header text plots the cached name, category and value.
  • multi_level_pivot_categories_plot_their_innermost_level (new). A two-level multiLvlStrRef whose innermost column holds the cache stays live: categories Graph!$A$4:$B$7 and name Graph!$C$3 are kept, marked innermost_categories, and a save writes the name strRef and a two-level multiLvlStrRef (both levels cached, innermost first) that reads back with the same references and the flag set. When an innermost cell shows another label, the block plots the cache's 4 innermost labels. A one-level reference whose cells hold the cache stays live, and plots the cache when a cell differs.
  • a_multi_level_pivot_chart_draws_one_label_per_point_after_saves (crates/engine/src/tests.rs, new). A PivotChart with a two-level block goes through write_xlsx → read_xlsx → gridcraft_chart::resolve twice: each time the references and the flag survive and the chart has 4 labels for 4 points.
  • a_multi_level_category_block_draws_its_innermost_level (crates/chart/src/tests.rs, new). resolve of a series marked innermost_categories gives 4 labels for 4 points from the block's last column (a row per point) or last row (a column per point); without the flag every cell is a label, as before.
  • series_names_with_quotes_survive_a_save (new). A stale PivotChart series' cached name Sales "East" keeps its quotes through a save, and so does a literal name on a chartex chart. The round trip in the first test now compares names as the chart shows them instead of trimming quotes.
  • literal_series_keep_their_points_without_a_valid_pt_count (new). A non-pivot numLit with ptCount x, 0 or 1 for two points, or with points without idx, keeps both points; a valid larger ptCount keeps a trailing gap.
  • Each of these new tests fails with its part of the fix reverted.
  • The resolve test in crates/chart/src/tests.rs now checks that an array-constant series uses its own number format and a reference series uses its cells' format, even when the series carries one.
  • a_deleted_automatic_title_stays_deleted (new). It covers: no flag, val="0", val="1", an explicit title winning over the flag, and both states surviving a save.
  • Rebased on main 84acf62: cargo test -p gridcraft-xlsx -p gridcraft-chart -p gridcraft-model -p gridcraft-engine passes, and cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps (fmt, clippy, test, assets, layers, wasm, parity, keytips) on the head commit 1ba5d32.

Review

Four adversarial review rounds ran on this diff.

  • Round 1: a matching multi-level PivotChart category block stayed live but drew 8 labels for 4 points and saved as an 8-point strRef; a cached series name with quotes came back as Sales ""East"" after a save. Changed: multi-level blocks plotted their cache (since revised in round 2), and the chart and chartex writers unescape literal names through literal_text (series_names_with_quotes_survive_a_save).
  • Round 2: since that fix, a multi-level block whose innermost level matches the cache was always stale, so a save replaced Graph!$A$4:$B$7 with an innermost-only strLit and the name ref Graph!$C$3 with a literal, losing the outer level. Changed: such a block now stays live with its category and name references kept, and the new Series.innermost_categories flag makes the renderer draw only the innermost level (4 labels for 4 points); a block whose innermost level doesn't match still plots its cache. Also corrected here: the staleness rule, the multi-level Verification entry, and the Measured numbers (remeasured above).
  • Round 3: innermost_categories wasn't saved: the block was written as a 2-column strRef with an interleaved 8-point cache, so after save and reopen the chart drew 8 labels again. Changed: flagged categories are written as a multiLvlStrRef with every level cached, innermost first, which reads back with the flag set (a_multi_level_pivot_chart_draws_one_label_per_point_after_saves, two save/reopen cycles through resolve). The model doc comment and the claims above about what a save writes now match the code. gridcraft-cli convert (release build) of the reviewer's ml_pivot_match.xlsx writes a <c:cat> byte-identical to the input's multiLvlStrRef, and converting that output again writes the same chart1.xml. The non-pivot ml_nonpivot.xlsx writes the same chart1.xml as before this round (a strRef, as on main).
  • Round 4, on 1ba5d32, found no defects that regress against main or ef6776d. It ran a flagged series whose PivotTable was deleted (saved as a multiLvlStrRef with no c:pivotSource, which reopens unflagged with 8 labels, as at ef6776d) and confirmed the convert claims above. It narrowed one claim: a save writes flagged categories as a multiLvlStrRef only when the block is one area with as many rows (or columns) as the values have points. Otherwise it falls back to the old 2-column strRef. Unchanged; listed under Not done.
  • Reviewed by @FredApps at 1ba5d32 (review), from reading the source plus the hosted cargo xtask ci. No defects found in the code or the tests. He didn't approve because the Excel repair-prompt check below is still open, and he left it to a maintainer whether that check is needed before merging. Answered here, with the schema check above.
  • Excel check by @xmaks82 on 1ba5d32 (comment): Excel 2016 (16.0.16327) through COM with alerts on, 22 saved PivotChart files (8 built by Excel, 3 Open XML SDK samples, each also with series formulas pointed at $J$2). No repair prompt or other dialog. 20 of 22 open. The other 2 fail the same way when saved from base 84acf62. His follow-up (comment) traces it to the pivot cache writer, not to external links or this PR: cache fields holding error values are written with containsString="0" (and text with errors with containsMixedTypes="1"), which Excel refuses. With open #1447: TRUE/FALSE or error values in a pivot source no longer make the file unopenable #1814, all 22 open in Excel 2016. Excel binds the literal series of the Excel-built charts back to their PivotTable, and the SDK charts match the originals' values in all 3, against none on 84acf62. He found the multi-level category loss now under Not done.
  • Merge of main 23829d8 (9f127b5). Only crates/engine/src/tests.rs conflicted: both sides' new tests are kept (this PR's multi-level PivotChart test and main's csv_as_text test). An adversarial review of the merge against both parents found nothing. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on the merged head.
  • Merge of main 06920de (7bce227; head 8338a35). Conflicts: crates/chart/src/resolve.rs (this PR's innermost-level PivotChart categories combined with main's multi-level category_levels), crates/chart/src/tests.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/xlsx/src/chart.rs (pivot cache plotting combined with main's defined-name qualification, multi-level category XML, combo kinds and pivot source links), crates/xlsx/src/tests/mod.rs, docs/chart-parity.md. Adversarial review of the merge: a PivotChart drew main's outer category levels too; fixed in b56c2dd, so PivotCharts draw only the innermost level and ordinary charts keep multi-level labels, with tests asserting the exact labels. Duplicate docs rows were fixed in 4f92fc4, and main's revision-row text kept in 8338a35. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 8338a35.
  • CodeRabbit on 8338a35 (2 inline): (1) A square category block could take the wrong orientation; it now keeps the levels' own orientation (38696b9), with a test. (2) Chart cache reading: ptCount is capped at 1,048,576 points per cache. A chart-wide budget of 16,777,216 cached points keeps present points and only trims declared trailing gaps; points past the budget are dropped, with a read warning. All series are kept (38696b9, 78cf72a, 5b8c2cd, 3d82a9c), with tests for 40 declared points of which 10 are filled, 1,000 empty huge-count series, and a sparse high-index point. Adversarial review: ship. cargo xtask ci passes all 8 steps on 3d82a9c.

Not done

  • When a multi-level category axis has to be written as literals (the cells its formula refers to don't hold the cached points), only its innermost level is kept. A matching multi-level reference is still written as multiLvlStrRef. DrawingML has no multi-level literal: c:cat takes strLit/numLit, and c:multiLvlStrRef requires an f. xmaks82's RelationalPivotA2 (7 levels) saves with the 92 innermost labels only; the values and point count are right.
  • A flagged block whose first or last row is blank in every column, at the edge of the sheet's used range, is saved as the old 2-column strRef, not a multiLvlStrRef. point_count counts values in the clipped range while the block is measured unclipped (3 against 4), so after reopening the chart has 6 labels for 3 points. The values in that case are already cut to 3 points by the older num_data clipping, so nothing gets worse compared with main; fixing it means saving values and categories over the same unclipped range.
  • I haven't confirmed in Excel that a PivotChart saved with numLit/strLit opens without a repair prompt. The pivot link (c:pivotSource) is saved, and Excel rebuilds PivotChart series from the PivotTable. The chart parts saved from the 11 reports (12, 8 of them PivotCharts with numLit/strLit and c:pivotSource) are valid against the transitional dml-chart.xsd (ISO/IEC 29500-4). That doesn't rule out a repair prompt.
  • Axis and data label number formats typed in the Format pane (sourceLinked="0") are Charts: axis and data label number formats typed in the Format pane are read, drawn and saved #1219. That PR adds Series.label_number_format next to this PR's Series.number_format, so the two conflict in the Series literals and in read_chart. A trial merge resolves mechanically and passes the chart, xlsx, model and engine tests. Together, Idling Violations draws its cached points on a [h]:mm axis and a 0% secondary axis, as in Excel.

Tested as asked, against Excel's own output.

Files: our private corpus has no PivotCharts, so I made 8 with Excel 2016 (ru-RU) itself via COM: a PivotTable + PivotChart (clustered column, line, pie, stacked bar; 1 row field, Sum of 1 value field) over 8 real business workbooks (12–12,500 source rows; 1 to ~100 categories), saved by Excel, plus Excel's PDF of each pivot sheet as the reference. Also the three Open XML SDK test files with real PivotCharts (OlapPivotA3, RelationalPivotA2, RelationalPivotB2). Rendered with the snapshot example at fc45b7f with and without #684.

Result: #684 matches Excel on all 11; main doesn't.

gridcraft-cli check over our 256 real workbooks: identical to main (no calculation or round-trip change).

Thanks for building those in Excel. Eleven PivotCharts checked against Excel's own PDF, plus the three SDK files, is more than I could check here, and the grand-total slice on main is exactly the bug this fixes.

You're right about the field buttons: GridCraft doesn't draw PivotChart field buttons yet. That needs its own feature (reading c14:pivotOptions and drawing the buttons and drop zones), so I'll leave it out of this PR.

Rechecked 73a2517 on the same 11 PivotCharts (8 built by Excel from our workbooks + the 3 SDK files): every snapshot is pixel-identical to the previous head's, so still matching Excel's own rendering.

Thanks for rechecking. Pixel-identical is what I hoped for: 73a2517 only tightens when a PivotChart series keeps its live cell references (the cells must hold the cached points), and Excel-built PivotCharts like yours plot the cache either way. The field buttons are a separate feature, so I have left them out of this PR.

…stay off

Excel often saves a PivotChart series with formulas that only approximate
its PivotTable: every formula pointing at the table corner cell, or a block
that takes in the grand total row. Excel draws the chart from the
PivotTable, so the cached points are what it shows; GridCraft evaluated the
formulas and drew empty charts or a stray grand total bar. When a PivotChart
series references don't cover their cached points (numCache, strCache or the
innermost multiLvlStrCache level), the series now plots the cached points
and cached name as array constants. Refreshing the PivotTable rebinds the
chart to live cells as before.

A chart with <c:autoTitleDeleted val="1"/> and no title now opens with its
automatic title off, instead of showing the lone series name ("Series1").

Array-constant series also survive a save: literals are read by index and
ptCount (gaps stay #N/A instead of shifting later points), and written by
parsing the array constant, so text with quotes, commas or semicolons is
kept.

Literal values keep their number format: Series gains number_format, read
from the numLit or numCache formatCode and written as the numLit
formatCode (it was always General). The renderer uses it only for array
constants; references keep using their cells' format. Cached PivotChart
points now label as "$185" or "5.36%", as in Excel.

A PivotChart series stayed live whenever its reference had as many cells
as the cache had points. With one row item, every formula pointing at the
PivotTable's corner cell passed that test, so the chart plotted the header
text. Multi-level category references never passed it (width × height
cells for N points), so a correct reference was replaced by a leaf-only
literal and its outer level was lost on save.

The check now compares values, once every sheet is read (read_chart
returns each PivotChart series' cache; plot_pivot_caches runs after the
sheets load): a series plots its cache unless the referenced cells hold
the cached points, numbers within rounding and text as is. For a
multiLvlStrRef, the innermost level's column (or row) is compared, so a
reference that matches stays live and is saved as a reference.

Literals read before this branch keep their points again: a missing,
unreadable or too small ptCount gives way to the points present, and
points without an idx go in document order.

…ted series names survive a save

A PivotChart whose multiLvlStrRef categories cover two levels (Graph!$A$4:$B$7 for 4 points) stayed live when the innermost column matched the cache. The renderer reads every cell of that block, so the chart drew 8 labels for 4 points, and a save flattened it into an 8-point strRef. Such a block is now compared cell for cell like any other reference: its cell count isn't the point count, so the innermost level is plotted from the cache, one label per point, and saved as a strLit. A one-level reference whose cells hold the cache still stays live.

A literal series name is stored as a quoted formula literal with doubled quotes ("Sales ""East"""), which stale PivotChart series now always get. The chart and chartex writers only stripped the outer quotes, so the name came back as Sales ""East"" after a save. Both writers now unescape the literal through one helper.
…rences and draws its innermost level

Since the previous commit, a multiLvlStrRef block of more than one level was always stale, so a save replaced Graph!$A$4:$B$7 with an innermost-only strLit and the name ref Graph!$C$3 with a literal, losing the outer level. The block is again compared by its innermost column (or row). When that holds the cache, the series stays live, its references kept and saved as before, and the new Series.innermost_categories flag makes the renderer draw only the innermost level, one label per point. A block whose innermost level doesn't hold the cache still plots its cache.
…still draw one label per point after a reopen

innermost_categories wasn't saved: the block was written as a 2-column strRef with an interleaved 8-point cache, so after save and reopen the chart drew 8 labels again. Flagged categories are now written as a multiLvlStrRef whose multiLvlStrCache has ptCount = the point count and one lvl of cell texts per level, innermost first, which a PivotChart reads back with the flag set. Categories without the flag are written as before.

I read the full diff and found no defect in the code or tests (the pivot cache check, read_points, the numLit writer, multi_level_data and the autoTitleDeleted handling all read correctly, and the new tests cover the cases they describe). I am not approving because the description itself lists an unverified case, and that is a maintainer decision.

Question for a maintainer: the description says "I haven't confirmed in Excel that a PivotChart saved with numLit/strLit opens without a repair prompt". This PR changes what a plain open and save does to an Excel-authored PivotChart: series whose formulas do not match the cache are now written as literal data (numLit/strLit) instead of the original references. Is it acceptable to merge without that check in Excel, or should someone open a saved copy of one of the fleet reports in Excel first?

Two smaller notes, neither a blocker on its own:

  • The save now writes autoTitleDeleted val="0" for an automatic title (it wrote 1 before). This is stated in the description and tested (a_deleted_automatic_title_stays_deleted).
  • The description says #1219 conflicts with this PR in the Series literals; whichever lands second will need a rebase.

Validation: source reading plus the hosted check "cargo xtask ci", which passed on this head (1ba5d32). No local tests were run (builds are paused).

@FredApps thanks for reading it this closely. I agree that the Excel open is the one unverified risk, and only Excel can settle it. Here's what I checked on 1ba5d32 since your review:

  • Schema. I opened and saved the 11 fleet reports with gridcraft-cli convert. That writes 12 chart parts. 8 of them are PivotCharts written with numLit/strLit data and their c:pivotSource kept. All 12 are valid against the transitional DrawingML chart schema (ISO/IEC 29500-4 dml-chart.xsd, checked with lxml). A file can be schema-valid and still get a repair prompt from Excel, so this narrows the risk but doesn't close it.
  • Charts: axis and data label number formats typed in the Format pane are read, drawn and saved #1219. I wrote both PRs. A trial merge of the two on current main still conflicts in crates/chart/src/resolve.rs and crates/chart/src/tests.rs. Whichever lands second, I'll merge main into the other and resolve it.

The fleet reports hold customer data, so I can't attach them. I don't have Excel here. The case comes up when a PivotChart's series formulas don't point at the cells holding its cached points. Report generators write that: these MyGeotab exports point every series at Graph!$J$2. Excel itself doesn't let you edit a PivotChart's series. If someone with Excel has a generated workbook like that, opening it in GridCraft built from this branch (or running gridcraft-cli convert in.xlsx out.xlsx), saving, and then opening the copy in Excel would settle it. The things to check are whether Excel asks to repair, and whether the chart still shows its points after Refresh All.

If nobody can check before a maintainer decides, the description already lists this under "Not done", so that decision has what it needs.

@neilcawse @FredApps I ran the Excel-open check on 1ba5d32 in Excel 2016 (16.0.16327, Russian UI), on our own workbooks (no customer data).

Files. 11 PivotCharts: the 8 Excel built earlier from our sales tables (the ones from the 12.10 check) and the 3 Open XML SDK files (RelationalPivotA2, RelationalPivotB2, OlapPivotA3). For each I also made a variant whose series formulas all point at $J$2, as the MyGeotab exports do, so 22 inputs. gridcraft-cli convert built from this branch wrote every one of the 22 PivotCharts with numLit/strLit and kept c:pivotSource. That includes the Excel-authored charts whose formulas do match the cache.

Repair prompt: none. Each file was opened through COM with alerts on and a 60-second watchdog that records the text of any dialog. No saved copy produced a repair prompt or any other dialog. Excel 2016 opened 20 of the 22 saved copies.

The two that don't open aren't caused by this PR. 05_column and 08_barstacked (and their variants) hold links to external workbooks. Saved by this branch, Workbooks.Open fails with no dialog. Saved by its base 84acf62, they fail the same way, and the originals open. I'll look into it separately.

What Excel shows after the open:

  • Excel-authored charts (8 files). Excel binds the literal series back to their PivotTable. PivotLayout.PivotTable is set, and the series formula is again =SERIES(Лист1!$B$3,Лист1!$A$4:$A$6,…). The category/value pairs are identical to the originals. In 4 files the points come in a different order, but the PivotTable rows are reordered the same way. For 3 of them 84acf62 gives the identical order, so this isn't the chart code. Titles are kept ("Итог"). On 84acf62 the title is lost, and the $J$2 variants of the line charts reopen as line-with-markers.
  • SDK files (3). GridCraft keeps their PivotTables as plain cells ("external data source" warning), so the charts reopen as ordinary charts on the literals. Series names and values match what Excel reads from the originals in all 3. On 84acf62 they match in none: its category references produce 405 points instead of 92 in RelationalPivotA2, and 2002 instead of 389 in RelationalPivotB2.

One loss to note. When the chart is written as literals, a multi-level category axis keeps only its innermost level. RelationalPivotA2 has a 7-level multiLvlStrRef (address, city, country, customer, … employee). The saved copy has a single strLit with the 92 employee names, so the outer six levels are gone from the axis labels. The values and point count are right. The schema has no multi-level literal, so this may be the best a literal can do, but it's worth a line in the description.

Raw COM log and chart exports are available if useful.

Thanks, @xmaks82, this answers FredApps' question. Excel showed no repair prompt or other dialog for any of the 22 saved copies. 20 opened normally; 05_column and 08_barstacked and their variants didn't open, and they fail the same way when saved from base 84acf62, so they don't point to a regression here. Whether they need tracking is for the maintainers.

You're right about the multi-level axis. DrawingML has no multi-level literal: c:cat takes strLit or numLit, and c:multiLvlStrRef requires an f. So when the categories have to be written as literals (the cells its formula refers to don't hold the cached points, as in RelationalPivotA2), only one level can be kept, and this PR keeps the innermost. A multi-level reference that does match is still written as multiLvlStrRef. I've added this to Not done and recorded your check in the description.

Follow-up on the two workbooks that didn't open (05_column, 08_barstacked): the cause is the pivot cache writer, not linked workbooks or this PR. Cache fields holding error values were written with containsString="0" (and text plus errors with containsMixedTypes="1"), and Excel refuses those files. Open #1814 fixes that. With it, all 22 saved copies and a real corpus report open in Excel 2016. Details in #1814.

Walkthrough

Chart series now support explicit number formats and innermost category labels. XLSX chart handling reads and writes PivotChart caches, multi-level categories, literal values, and automatic-title deletion state.

Changes: Chart series and XLSX chart handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Series settings and category resolution
crates/model/src/features.rs, crates/chart/src/resolve.rs, crates/chart/src/tests.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/forecast.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs, crates/engine/src/pivot.rs, crates/engine/src/sample.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Series adds number_format and innermost_categories. Resolution uses the innermost category level when enabled and applies explicit formats to literal array values. Series constructors initialize the new fields. Tests cover category orientation, square ranges, and PivotChart round trips.
XLSX chart cache parsing and import
crates/xlsx/src/chart.rs, crates/xlsx/src/drawing.rs, crates/xlsx/src/read.rs, crates/xlsx/src/tests/*
Chart reading parses bounded cached points and array constants. Import retains PivotChart caches and applies them after workbook cells load. Tests cover cache matching, category levels, cache limits, and warnings.
Chart serialization and round-trip behavior
crates/xlsx/src/chart.rs, crates/xlsx/src/chartex.rs, crates/xlsx/src/tests/*, docs/chart-parity.md
Chart writing handles literal names, numeric formats, array constants, and automatic-title deletion state. Tests and parity notes cover chart read-back behavior.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 07753

A crafted XLSX can still consume substantial memory when opened, especially with many charts. Bound aggregate cache expansion before merging unless this import risk is explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 07753

A specially crafted workbook can cause large memory allocations across many charts. Individual chart limits reduce each expansion but do not contain the combined total, potentially interrupting the application opening the file.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Workbook-wide chart expansion lacks aggregate resource containment. Attacker-controlled point counts or sparse indices allocate dense point vectors and expanded literals. The budget resets for every imported chart, while literals and deferred PivotChart caches remain retained across charts. Small chart parts can therefore drive disproportionate memory consumption and denial of service in the importing process. The base reader expanded only physically present literal points and did not retain these PivotChart caches. Per-chart and decompressed-package limits mitigate individual inputs but do not close this aggregate expansion path.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated attackable asset is the memory and availability of the process importing an attacker-supplied workbook. The path requires opening or importing the file, not additional chart-specific privileges. Shared-service, tenant, and host-level consequences depend on deployment isolation, which was not supplied.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A crafted workbook can repeat sparse chart declarations to multiply dense allocations. Each chart obtains a fresh point budget; numeric literals materialize missing slots as #N/A strings, and PivotChart point vectors remain pending until all sheets load. This newly introduced amplification can exhaust memory before normal import completion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Point allocation is checked before allocation against a worksheet-row cap and a shared per-chart budget. Package reading separately limits decompressed part size, cumulative decompressed bytes, and ZIP entries. These controls measure point counts within one chart or package bytes, not aggregate expanded chart memory.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Read-local ownership and clone-then-replace updates contain ordinary reconciliation state changes: pending caches are not stored in the returned workbook, and repeating reconciliation produces the same cache-backed values. These properties do not contain allocation exhaustion. The inspected budget tests exercise single-chart exhaustion, not cumulative expansion across charts.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Carry a workbook-scoped expansion budget through every chart read and reconciliation, charging dense point storage and expanded literal bytes before allocation. Define a bounded failure or truncation outcome when it is exhausted, and release processed pending caches promptly to reduce peak memory.

Compare the PivotChart name independently of category and value fallback.

When both category and value references match their caches, plot_cached reaches the early continue at crates/xlsx/src/chart.rs:312-314. It never checks whether ser.name matches c.name, so a stale name reference remains and can show the wrong series name. Apply the cached name only when its own reference is stale.

Share the cached-point budget across the workbook. read_chart_with_budget creates a fresh 16,777,216-point budget for every chart. A workbook with multiple chart parts can therefore retain large expanded literals and cached strings across all charts. The package decompression limits do not limit this post-parse expansion.

Store one ChartReadBudget in Ctx, pass it to every chart read, and warn only when the shared budget first becomes exhausted.

Approving at d0ad5ba. My open question at 1ba5d32 was whether Excel opens the numLit/strLit PivotCharts without a repair prompt. xmaks82 ran that check in Excel 2016 on 22 saved copies (11 PivotCharts plus variants with all series pointing at one cell): no repair prompt or other dialog. The two files that did not open fail the same way on the base, and the cause was traced to the pivot cache writer (#1814), not this PR. The multi-level category loss is now listed under Not done.

What I read since my last review: the resolve.rs change (cached points used when the series cells do not hold them) and its tests, the chart import bounds in xlsx/chart.rs (point cap, series cap, per-chart budget checked before allocation, trailing gaps clamped, points past the budget dropped with a warning), the drawing.rs warning path, and the new tests, including the 17-series budget-boundary test. I found no defect. The gate and SonarCloud are green at this head.

Not verified: the multi-level axis handling beyond the author's and xmaks82's description, and the Excel result on any workbook other than the ones they tested. I read the code and the CI results; I did not run the app.

Re-review at SHA 077533e (my last APPROVE was at d0ad5ba).

The PR-only delta is empty: same line count and no differing lines against my approved head, so this head is a pure rebase onto main.

Checked: the PR-only diff at both heads is identical.
Not verified: I did not run the build or tests locally; the hosted gate decides that.
